talking to some one he said hes engine builder stated that a 383 wil take more power than a 440 block will due to being a shorter deck hight. i my self can sort of agree on the being shorter but i still think it will split the mains just as easy as my 73 440 did.

what do you guys think? 383 stronger or weaker or the same as a car 440 block?

right amount of hp they all break, even great blocks break,
I'm running 383-400 blocks because they are cheap and when built right run deep in the 9s and last @ 5 years, some longer, seen those big bra hah motors blow, when they do, its big money to repair everything is so customized.

couldn't tell you, but i'm gonna find out (i have a 383 block under the bench. i'm thinkin' 438 long rod screamer). my guess is the main webs are a little stronger too, as a result of the smaller main size.


for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

To quote 440source.com.............

"Shown above is a #2 main saddle off of a 1970 model 383. We have found all 71 and earlier low deck "B" blocks (including 361's, etc) to have this type of main saddles. "A" in this case measures between 1.900 and 2 inches, and "B" measures about .350" These are probably the smallest measurements of all the big blocks."

And I seem to recall reading it elsewhere........maybe Chuck Senatores book, dunno, but the 383 seemd to be refered to as the weakest of the B/RB blocks.

It doesn't mean that someone can't build it for a good street/strip car though. Just have to know what threshold (rpm/bobweight limit) your comfortable with.
