A friend of a friend has asked for my help on making his 68 AMX into a great street strip cruiser, with emphasis on street. I may know something about BB mopes ,but I can use a lot of help here. Heads, easiest Big shortblock build, intake, cam, headers, you name it.Thanks in advance! His desire is a very tractable motor, so my guess is it should be built with torque coming in strong down around 2400 rpm or so, which in my mind dictates a dual plane intake like a performer RPM. Budget is somewhere around $7,000. What ya got for ideas? Also, do you have a favorite engine bulder in the Minneapolis Mn metro that does great work on the AMC motor?

Thanks, guys. Need to stay in about the $7,000 range, want to keep the whole project local if at all possible. I am going to strongly encourage that the motor be dynoed, preferably by the shop that puts it together. After looking up Edelbrocks offerings, their RPM package looks pretty good. Performer RPM heads, RPM air gap intake, Edelbrock 800 carb to top it off. RPM cam specs are 234/244/112 duration, .520 intake lift, .544 exhaust lift. Any input on this package, or others, appreciated.

The Indy 401-sr heads flow better than the Edelbrock heads and for that I would use the air gap intake . Also if you offset grind the crank to " SB chevy rods" it makes it a engine which has proven to be a reliable power house it is not to hard to build 500+ hp and 500+ ft torque in a very street oriented build Parts are available to go from mild to 1000 + hp so have fun. they have even started makeing HYD roller lifters for the AMC

Thanks again, lots of info. This turned out to be a 1970 year 390 (thought it was a 360) so sticking with the 390 seems to be the logical choice. Four speed car, just like I want some day. Thats kinda why I got involved with the project. At this point it looks like he wants to have the stock heads ported, and work from there. That will make choices a lot easier.
