Last night I was driving around and noticed a funny shutter off the line. Not sure what it was, it feels like it's trying to shifter into second or third but not all the way. I then noticed it doing the same thing when I was in second gear and once in first gear but never in third. When it happens I will let off the throttle and it stops. If I hit the gas some while it's doing it..it hits hard the quits. If I get on it alittle and run through the gears it doesn't do it, only when I'm kinda putting around. I've noticed around and under 2000rpms it does it alot but no where near all the time.

The car is my 72 dodge demon which is my daily driver. The motor is a 340 and the trans was built by me 2 years ago and has never given me any problems. It has a SMR 3k conveter, SMR manual reverse valve body, lower first gear, ray bands and clutches, the multi spring kit and built servo. It's a non lockup up 904.

I have a console shift and have checked and rechecked the linkage adjustment with the help from my gf.
I'm at a complete lost on what it is. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks.

I keep the reverse alittle loose and second alittle tight. I haven't adjusted them in awhile. Which way should I go?

Why not adjust them correctly to factory specs? http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/auto/4.html

Check your driveshaft U-joints first. You've got a dry one.

I love the smell of Deer guts in the morning, it smells like... VICTORY!

I have u joints that you can't grease. I'm heading back home in 2 hours so I'll drop the driveshaft and see what I find. Really not looking forward to a 4 and half hour drive without finding the problem.

I have adjusted the bands per spec awhileback but the kickdown wanted to slip with my 4.10 gears in shifting at 7k so I tightened it up abit which solved the problem so I just left it as is.

The way it acts I can't really see it being a band. My guess is that the third gear cluthes is getting pressure from some where.

The more I think about it a u joint seems to fit since if I get in it...it doesn't do it. Maybe it is doing it but the more power is just powering threw it. thanks for the help guys.

Made it home fine. It did it about 12 times all while in different gears but all while around 2000rpms or alittle less. Also another thing I noticed was a raspy metal to thin metal scratching noise when in first gear before I get on the throttle(I don't have a splash shield). Once the rpms go over 1k it goes away. Now I'm thinking converter....that's where the sound is coming from.

Also my MPG stayed the same as always.

That was thought of mine but I have changed it a few months back to a solid B&M plate. I double checked all the bolts and made sure they were tight.

I'll grab some dye penetrant from work and check for cracks.

Was the shudder there before you changed flex plate? If not, maybe wrong flex plate.

I would think about dropping the driveshaft out as mentioned and make sure they are free and in good shape. .

The shudder has just started. I've had that flexplate on there for awhile.

I did drop the driveshaft and everything is good there. I might go ahead and change them soon just to make sure.

I was driving around town here and noticed that it's more of a load put on the motor then a shutter. It does it so fast(load on and off) that it feels like a shutter though. It reminds me of a newer car when the AC kicks on at idle. I was watching my amp guage and volt gauge two times while it was doing it but nothing was unusual. Now I'm trying to think of anything the would put a load on my motor like that and only around 2 grand. Not coming up with anything except my timing is full in exactly at 2 grand.

Just got done changing the front ujoint and so far so good...no more shutter.

When I took the driveshaft back out I noticed the yoke was a hair harder to turn in a certain spot. I didn't notice this before mainly because I was in a hurry and didn't rotated it in every spot.

I also checked for cracks on the flexplate with some penetrant dye and found nothing. I then saw the flexplate is rubbing on the mini starter housing. It doesn't do it all the time just when in first gear before 1 grand. Not sure why but I'll prbably just pull the starter and do alittle grinding or use some shims and pull the starter out some.

Oh you guys may find this funny. I recently moved and my new apartment complex won't let me work on my demon so I went right before dark to a big empty parking lot that is(didn't know it when I pulled in) owned by a business that is still open. I had just got my driveshaft out when I had a flashlight pointed right at my eyes. I heard someone ask "What do you think this is your garage?" He pulled the light away and it was the plants security gaurd with his hand on the butt of his pistol. I apoligized all over myself and told him I would move the car and he said no need as long as I keep the parking lot clean. I thought I was in for it but thankfully he was a nice guy.

Anyway thanks for the help.

Maryland, USA,
i had a shutter in my newly acquired four door and i thought it was the tires from sitting for 22 years flat spots, it turned out to be a broken trans mount, i changed it last night and test drove no more shutter. I also thought it could have been a u joint.
