Hey all,
Is it necessary to "turn over" a tranny that will sit for awhile?
Like turning over a motor or spinning the yoke on an axle to keep lubed?

I didnt think it was, as I figured the enemy of trannys is primarily heat, but it was suggested to me to do it for the seals.

So....if yes, then how the heck would you "turn it"? just spin the shafts? with or without converter?

Yeah I know...strange question, but when I heard that, It got me thinking.

Thanks for the help.

Actually moisture is the enemy... all I do is use the
plugs to seal it up... I pick up a trans plug kit some
years back for the 727/904 .... P/N P4120280

several years ago I rebuilt a 904 then let it sit ouside for 2 years w no covering or dipstick (dont ask ) then I dropped the pan (in the summer) and it had no water so I went ahead & ran it & it performed flawlessly. I do coat/drown everything w trany fluid inside when I rebuild one. best plan for one (or any part) is to store it in a somewhat low humidity environment where the temp stays high & doesn't fluctuate/drop below the condensation level (dew point?). Sealing something up with moisture inside traps that moisture inside

I had one sit for 8 years in the garage, no plugs or anything other than a dipstick. All I did was put a new front seal in it and it still worked flawlessly when I put it back on the road.

I am in ND where winter temps reach -30 or even colder in the winter and have had rebuilt 727's sit several years in an unheated pole garage and they suffered no ill effects. They have a lot of lubricant applied during assembly. Take the pans off before installation and have yet to find any condensation in one.

Thanks gentlemen.

That is what I thought, but the suggestion about "turning over" got me thinking.

The 727 is full of fluid and wrapped in big garbage bags inside a dry garage, so shouldnt have any problems with moisture or cold anyways.

Shouldnt be sitting for that long. Has been for just a couple months and should be ready to drop in by summer.

Thanks again for the "piece of mind"....

For just a few months and inside it won't be a problem.

x 99 ... and even if you store it outside .. not a prob. Just as long as you have it covered up and no rain or snow can get inside.
