I have a 63 chrysler with the 741 carrier(open)i want to put a posi in that rear end housing but from what i,m told i need to add axle shims when your going from a open rear end to a posi...mancini does not sell those shims..any old fart heads know what thickness shims i need....my chrysler books say i need them but they don,t say how thick or a part #(these axles have the big nut that hold them in)
thanks in advance

I cant answer your question but that big nut at the
drum is what holds the drum on(with a key way and key)

Hi,
I've done this before, the axles were shorter on a sureqrip back then, but I did it by taking a the flanges of a later bolt in type axle and cutting the center out of them so all you have left is the ring with the bolt holes in it. they're about 1/8 to 3/16in thick, that's about how much shorter the axles were, then you use one on each side and then play around with the stock thin shims that come with a open rear to get the end play you need, around .008 total. I've got some stock thin shims if you need some more to play with. either that way or you have to cut the axles off. it will also move your brake drums out a like amount which shouldn't hurt as long as you don't have a rust ridge where the shoes don't run.

Why mess around with shims, just cut/grind 1/8" off the splined end of each axle shaft...I've done it numerous times. (remember to chamfer the ends a little)
You may need some more of the original shims to adjust the end play or you may need to remove some.

Old racer, what is the cutoff year for the shorter axles on a suregrip? I have a 68 Charger with a "one legger" 742 and have a 742 suregrip unit I was getting ready to install. I thought it was a simple pull old/install new new job.
Thanks Mike

Hi,
the axle length thing was just on the old style axles with the taper on the end and the big nut. 1964 and older. your ok with yours , just readjust the end play with the adjuster on the pass axle. If you use the clutch style suregrip make sure the end play button is in there before installing the rear end.

Actually, '64 is the first year that the axles were the same length....'63 and earlier have shorter axles with SG.
