Looking at painting a car with Summit Brand base/clear. It will be my first attempt at painting and I want to go cheap (it's a race car). Was thinking of using Evercoat Featherfill G2 surfacer/primer because I've used it before, it easily available and it's cheap. Question is will this be compatible with the Summit base? I looked at the Summit base coat P sheet and it says it's compatible with urethane 2K primers but the Evercoat is polyester. Will sealing over the Evercoat be sufficient or not? If so what would I seal with?

You'll be fine.BUt why not go single stage, since it will be cheaper and more durable as well?Every paint brand offers their sealers, many of them are tintable .Also most epoxy primers can be converted to a sealer by simply reducing catalyzed primer,as well as many 2K primers. So it's a matter of availability and preference

I think the Summit brand paint offers you the option to clear over the color or not so I may not (cheaper as you mentioned).

So it looks like I will finish up my filler work, epoxy primer the car, then use the Featherfill filler primer, use sealer then spray color.

Thanks.

You have to make sure that they don't just sell you basecoat color,if you're planning on using single stage paint, make sure it's single stage paint, not basecoat. I don't want to confuse you,but for extra gloss, you can add clearcoat in last coat of paint. I do it on all trucks and trailers I paint for local lawn care/landscaping company.

I'm still wondering why Summit? There are plenty of other places online that carry paint brands that have been around for a good while.

I understand about the base vs single stage color. Thanks for making sure.

Summit seemed easy to figure out. They have "kits", the info is on-line, they have clear directions, and it price seemed right.

I've heard of other options but retailers are very limited here in town and what I could find was significantly more money.

I appreciate any info/options.

Have you heard of any of these places? They all carry what you need and prices are pretty good.

Dealing with Summit,is like Wal-Mart,where you can buy underwear, toothpaste and groceries, lol, nothing against Summit, unless they carry proven brands.Places I listed above deal with mainly autobody & paint supplies & tools and carry brands that have been around for a while, may not be top quality, but something that has been used for a while with decent results by many.

Summit's paint is re-branded Kirker paint. You can get a complete kit from these guys pretty cheap.
