Measure the diameter of the tubes to see if they are
the THICK ones or not... I put a 9" in my Rampage
not to long ago... it was the larger diameter but
its what I had
EDIT
Either way a full housing with a possi is worth a $100

that rear would be too wide also so it would have to be narrowed for a b-body but for a $100 you could at least sell the posi chunk for $250+ if it is in decent condition

if you can find someone to narrow the housing there are cheap aftermarket axles for the 9 inch---randys sells the 9,s in any inch increment for about $100 each---so you could get a 28,29,30----if you start looking for a 28.5 inch the set will cost about $500 for a custom cut---bob

I will ask why do this?
First a dana is more appropriate, stronger, less costly.
Sell the 9" to someone who doesn't know better then put the money into a Dana.
Stock 9" is no stronger than a 8 3/4 or 9 1/4 that dodge uses.
It can be made quite strong with all aftermarket parts but most everyone I know who change to it from a 8 3/4 or even the bow tie guys from thier 12 bolts find now they have to spend money making it as strong as what they had.

its not being done to be stronger at all its being done because the posi chunks. are far cheaper and easier to come by. I do have access to to a machine shop too also i just rememberd i have a 57 ford ranchero rearend i got awile back.

A 57 Ford 9" housing is very highly sought after by street rodders. It is narrow and has a round smooth backside. Put it up for sale and get some $ out of it.

$100 for a whole 76 posi rear is a deal, go for it. I think it's probably too wide but there were earlier 4x4s that had pretty narrow housings, not to mention late model big Lincolns that also had disk brakes and I'm not talking about the Versailles. I've seen many of those at swap meets and they are pretty narrow.

Yup, the D60 or 8 3/4 is the politically correct way to go but sometimes money trumps correctness. I feel for ya.

R.

Just a FYI for you.. You can get an 8.8 from a pull a part for 150.. The one to get comes in a ford explorer 95 up body style. Disk brakes, posi, 3:73 gears or 4.10 and 31 spline axles and they are almost the same width as your b body rear end.. maybe 1" shorter depending on the year.

59 1/2" wide on the ford explorer axle And that is rotor to rotor..

Oh no! you must have a Dana rear end, even if it costs you more.
The Mopar police say so.

I am building a twin turbo sb 69 dart and it will have the 8.8 in it... I have put allot of spray through the old Mustang i use to have and that 8.8 held up perfectly..
