Is there enough room in the head to pull the lifters
without pulling the head... I have 1 lifter thats rattling
pretty good and I was thinking about changing it...
its fine above 1500 rpm but I hate the idle rattle...
this is a 2000 Jeep 4.0
Thanks

You have to remove the head. I had the same problem with my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0. This is another of Chrysler's wonderful engineering decisions.

I sorta figured that... I had the valve cover off my
94 4.0 for a gasket leak and I sorta remember small
holes for the push rods BUT I figured I'd ask and
MAYBE get lucky.... guess not ... oh well... thanks

My 04 has the same noise, after learning that you have to pull the head, I decided to live with the noise.

Just before your next oil change, dump a quart of ATF in it and see if it cleans it out. I had a 318 with a noisy lifter that I tried it on and the lifter quit rattling by the time the quart was empty. One of the few times I've had a backyard fix actually fix something

I've already done that... I bought this Jeep about
2 months ago and didnt like the oil pressure so I
dumped a QT of ATF in it and ran it for a week then
changed the oil and filter... I upped the oil to
10W40 and picked up some pressure but still rattles

Have you put a real gauge on it to see where the pressure is? I have an 05 Silverado with north of 300k (4.8L) on it that had low pressure at idle and barely OK at speed and the lifters would collapse at idle. New oil pump and problem solved. It was likely the relief valve but the pump is crank driven on an LS motor and I wasn't paying for that job twice so new pump it got.

Kevin

No I havent put a real gauge on it yet... but at
low rpm it rattles, at 1200 or so its ok... I
will put a gauge on it to see what it really is...
if its low on pressure I'll slap a pump on it

P, it is a PITA, but you may wanna drop the pan and ensure the pickup is not restricted.

Thanks Lonnie... I had planned on that first... I
dont really feel like pulling the head... plus the
pan comes off pretty easy

I wonder what they (Jeep) did different with the 2000's. My '98 (4.0/auto/4X4) has never made a noise like that. It's got 145,000 + on it. Still runs like a top. Only things that have cropped up that relate to problems were the crank position sensor, and the computer on the firewall. Changed both of them out, runs fine.
Question: is it a rattle or a ticking? Are you sure it's not a leaky exhaust gasket? They can sound very much the same (symptoms too). I know your very mechanically incline, but sometimes this kind of thing can kick your butt.

Oh yeah... its a lifter... its past a ticking... sounds
like the lifter is flat till it gets some oil pressure...
my 94 Jeep 4.0 has 250K on it and runs perfect, that
one has been a great engine to me... the only reason
I parked that one is its rusted so bad that the frame
rails at the front of the rear springs is starting
to go.. the floor pan on the right side is gone but
it still runs fine(nice and quiet)

Believe me... I thought about that... I figured I
could go through the 94 and have it ready then just
swap... I plan on scrapping the 94 because its just
unsafe to have someone driving it so I didnt want
to sell it

My theory is that Chrysler made a huge batch of bum lifters and didn't know how to get rid of them, so they dropped just one in every engine they built and every purple shaft cam/lifter package they sold. Twenty years later, it would appear that they're still whittling away at the pile!

You need to goto jeepstrokers.com, you are probably looking at a wiped cam lobe. When they removed the zddp from the oil, many people were only getting about 30K miles before the cams went to [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean]. When you have the pan off, check the cam from the bottom. Been there and done that. Tim

I was contemplating on pulling the valve cover to
determine which lifter it is and checking the lift
of the lobe... this is my plan of attack, 1) find
the problem lifter, 2) check lobe lift, 3) if ok, then
pull the pan and check the pump, 4) if need be, change
the pump, 5) then see if the head needs to come off
to change the lifter(most likely change them all)

My AMC/Jeep 4.2 seems to have a lifter that likes to bleed down at idle sometimes. Not always, but sometimes. It's annoying but since I've got a V8 I'm swapping in I've just lived with it. Hasn't hurt anything.
