i might need some help here folks. the last couple of times i've taken my 65 coronet out it's having some whinning/growling noises. the growling goes away when warmed up but the whinning continues. i've also noticed some aeration in fluid (level is correct on the stick). i'm thinking these noises are coming from the 'ol slushbox. the tranny is nothing fancy, basically stock with a shift kit and a '66 street hemi converter. it was built by a reputable shop in indy. has about 10,000miles on it. cars never been raced, no holding the brake burnouts just cruising. you guys got any ideas of what to look for? what causes air bubbles in the fluid? any comments appreciated.

Sounds like a pressure loss or leak internaly.
Adjataited fluid will cause that unit to fail, can't hold clutches and/or bands appied

Aeration is caused by an overfull condition or the pump sucking air...in some rare cases an internal leak will stir up the fluid enough to cause aeration. The problem is, aeration will cause whining, buzzing, etc. and so will an internal leak.

Whining/buzzing in the absence of aeration can be caused by a rapidly cycling pressure regulator valve, this has been a TF problem since day one...more of a nuisance than a real problem. A fluid/filter change might help.

john, i was hoping you'd chime in. the tranny seems to shift alright but noise is fairly bad when cold. where is the pressure regulator valve? what fluid would you recommend? how do you chase an internal leak? would an internal leak be a valve body issue? i'm not a "torqueflite guy" but i can pull maintenace on'em.

The factory recommended cure for the noise is to replace the valve body....I would rather just live with it.

For fluid go with Dexron or Type F.
