Hello and welcome.

There are many definitions (or levels, if you will) when it comes to "Number's Matching".

Keep in mind that in 1968, the VIN wasn't stamped on the body (rad support and trunk rail) like it was in later years so you have to match the SO number to the VIN. Do you have the fender tag and Broadcast sheet?

Here's some reading for you, though I would worry primarily that the VIN and body match and it's a bonus if you still have the original motor and trans;

Good luck.

There is a thread about 68 Hemi engines in the resto forum that will show you were to look for the VIN .

Here is the thread showing 68 VIN stamping location , it is the same whether it's a hemi or BB .

Welcome, post some pics of the car!
Last 8 of the VIN MIGHT be stamped on the bellhousing flange, near the oil pressure sender. Rad support will have the Sequential Order # (aka SO#) on the upper tie bar near the battery.
VIN should start with RM21 (coupe) or RM23 (hardtop).

RM21H8A327120 would've been Scheduled for Production during the last week of June 1968.

PT383H25301276 - PT = Trenton engine Plant, 383 = cu. in., H = standard 4bbl eng., 2530 = 7/1/68 short block assembly date, 1276 = unit number

2468130-11-LL = casting number 383 cu. in. block

6/20/68 = casting date

D383 7 1 2 - D = 1968 model year, 383 = cu. in., 7 1 = 7/1/68 - final assembly date, 2 = 2nd shift

WAG - not the assembly line original VIN stamped engine, but I'd bet it has been there since the car was new.

What is stamped HERE??

Dan just highlighted something I missed, it's NOT an HP engine, definitely not the original engine .

If it's an A/C car I don't think it would be HP? I know in 69 they were different.

I thought about that after I posted and was going to reread and ask the OP if it's an A/C car .

You need to see them all , without a picture there is no way of telling if someone else stamped them ? If it is the matching engine the number on the bottom of the pan tells one that the factory installed the WRONG engine in the car .
