Gents,

Thanks to all who contibuted to the rearend strength poll. The verdict was kinda all over the place.50/50 some guys have alot of luck and others dont.I think I'll take mine apart and give it a check. My car has alot of power but its a street car and see's drag action 3 to 4 times a year,so I'll give the existing 8 3/4 a shot.Does anybody have pictures or a link on how to properly back brace and 8 3/4? Thanks again-Gary

What exactly is the "bolt-load" for?Sorry for the ignorance but I see it al the time but I don't understand.
Is something getting drilled thru the rear end?
Please explain in detail(dumb it down for me)
I have been thinking about a backbrace myself for a 489 in a b-body with manual trans.
Thanks if anyone can help-John

I believe the main purpose is to preload the stock caps that are thought to be under strenght for the task, by transfering some of their flex and therefore their load to the axle housing thru the bolts that are loaded to the center of the rear of the caps. However I am not sure any of that is necessary when using the much stronger say MW steel billet caps and bolts/studs.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

You need them even with the billet caps because I think more than one person has split a billet cap .

This is another one of those threads where the OP is FISHING for the answer he WANTS to hear, but hey it's your money so do what YOU want , you do not need the blessing of anyone else on how you choose to spend YOUR cash , I know i don't go asking anyone else how I should spend my money once I have my mind set.

I understand the purpose(kind-of)what I don't understand is ,do you drill into the pumpkin housing?
I know it's a stupid question, but I don't understand if you are just mounting a load bolt on the reinforcment or if it goes thru the actual housing.

The housing is drilled, the back brace is drilled, and a threaded tube is welded in, both inside to the housing and outside to the brace.

Thanks for the photo's! Do you have to put the axle in a jig to weld it? I heard that welding will pull them out of alighnment if not jigged?-Gary

Welding the backbrace will for sure need to be done in a jig IMO.

I have installed many 8 3/4 back braces and they normally warp up to 3/16 inch even with the housing jigged end to end. I always have to cut off the ends and reweld them on using an alignment jig centering them off the centerline of the carrier saddles.
