You are on the edge of needing a Pro Trans 904. If you can afford it, they are great!

Go for it. Built one for this valiant 3 years ago. 5.90's in the 1/8 mile. Tough little transmissions.

Skip the ProTrans unless you just have to spend $5500. Tough little transmissions even with out anything special.

Sorry but for what it cost to build a GOOD 904, I would buy a Ultra bell and either put a glide or TH400 behind it. I don't see one advantage to running the Chrysler trans if you are starting from scratch.

Through extensive testing in the mid-'70's, Chrysler found that switch from a 727 to a 904 with identically prepared transmissions and converters reduced ET about .15. I'm pretty sure this was on small block cars. A big block and Hemi may not show so much improvement because their extra torque naturally overcomes the extra rotating weight easier in a 727.

Lots of Stock and SS big block and Hemi cars use 904 internals expensively adapted to a 727, but they are often aftermarket internals that are stronger. They are also serviced more than average. A shortcut would be a JW Ultra Bell. But the expense and maintenance/lifespan may not justify the results.

I guess all those Comp racers are mistaken then. The glide is not as quick and the 400 eats a lot of horsepower. But if you just have to put a GM trans in your car...

BTW neither the glide or the 400 is going to be any cheaper.

If the glide isn't as quick, the convertor is WRONG. I'd be willing to bet a COMP car with a 904 case has ZERO factory parts in it, and class requires it to be a Chrysler case.

Personally I'd throw a stick in the car, but you can be sure THAT would not have one single Chrysler part in it either.

Even the Chevy Comp cars are using an AMC 727 case with 904 guts in them. Sure they're not stock parts but for what he's doing the stock gear sets are plenty strong enough.

Of course it can. I've been a Chrysler Master Tech for over 30 years, I do it all from gas and diesel engines to automatic and manual transmissions to differentials, transfer cases, trim, driveability. electrical, etc., etc. There is nothing at all wrong with the 904, if you are hurting them under 800 HP you're doing something wrong.

One other thing I think needs mentioned. 904s rarely explode like 727s due to the lower recipricating weight of the front drum.-Randy

A glide will not be as quick as a ProFlite, right convertor or not. Even the ProMods have moved away from glides now and use a Rossler 210 3 speed.

At 950 total H/P you are going to have to use aftermarket internals no matter what trans you use. Using a 300 shot of spray your torque is going to be through the roof, so if you plan on using the pill on every pass a 'Glide or one of the 2 speed 400's may work better for you - you won't need the torque multiplication of a 904's 1ST gear.

I dont know what you plan on doing with the car but
if its a bracket car I would just use the 727.. it
wont have a heat issue... also if you plan on using
a progressive controller the 727 will handle it
