I purchased a 440 from a reputable builder out of state for my challenger, after about 1,000 miles and multiple failed attempts to fix a rear crank leak that it had since new, I also found that the crank is loose- moves 25Kth front to back. I pulled the motor and am shipping it back, the builder wants to look at it and has offered to make good on a repair. short of getting dozens of hours of my life back, is there anything I should be asking to ensure I don't get it back and go through the whole thing again? Its a 4 speed and one idea was the tranny shaft too long and pushing on the crank thus wearing the thrust bearing - but it's not, I measured and have plenty of free space (.2 inch or more).
I'm beating it is in the cranks thrust where the bearing rides, its worn enough that theres too much thrust clearance, this will cause lots of issues, like rear main seal leaks, premachure bearing life, I 'd tell him you want another crank, sounds like you really need a new engine builder.

Sorry for your troubles w it. Sounds like no choice but to send her back & I'd say most likely they'll make sure you get a good one this time as I dont think they want to take a chance of litigation being initiated. I have never done this as I rarely/never buy built purchases but a person said to get some paper with an attorneys letterhead on it & use it for correspondence & said it works wonders for keeping people in line. I forgot all about that until now. Good luck with it & I hope you get a good one

If the crank thrust surfaces are worn to where the clearance is excessive the crank will need to be replaced
