Spacers & shims work fine.. But be sure to check the clearance after torqueing down the shafts, as this can/will change its clearances.. Our preference is to do the shaft rocker setup with shims on a dummy head 1st, and we use a Dremel to modify the shim if required.. And finally we transfer entire shaft/rockers/shims to the final head.. Just my $0.02..

There is some variability in side clearance between rocker pairs, so I just wanted some idea of what range it should fall in for double checking during assembly...
