97 dodge ram 1500 4x4. 360 with auto trans. runs great in forward. put it in reverse and the engine shuts down. always starts right back up.

ITs a guess, but a wire shorting in your coulumn, or becoming an open circut when the shift linkage inside the coloumn is moved? Any trouble codes?

When I read this earlier I remembered an Omni that was in the shop at the Dodge dealer I worked at in the early 80's, it too would die when put in reverse but it was floor shifted... The problem was a wire harness that got torqued on the the vehicle was put in reverse..
