The new thermostat I bought for my 512 RB motor does not have a bypass/vent hole in it. What size hole should I drill in it? Does it matter where, as long as its within the "flow" area?
Thanks,
Brent

1/8" diameter is all you need to purge the air from the system. Some thermostats already come with a hole.

I'd go with a 1/16 hole. 1/8 is too big and you'll have a hard time getting the car to warm up in the winter.

1/8" hole for me in all the cars that I have replaced the thermostat. I personally have not had a problem with the engines warming up, but it gets pretty steamy down here.

My next one I am going to block the bypass hose completely. I fail to see how bypassing that amt of coolant is for a good purpose even though it must be or it wouldn't be engineered that way but I am going to see for myself(in a street car). We blocked it on our (circle track) stock car & no problems. would anybody care to comment?

The hole they`re talking about is just for preventing airlocks under the stat while filling the system.
I used a 1/8" hole on my 2.5 shadow and it would not warm up on really cold days. Since all that needs to go thru the hole is air 1/16" should be plenty.
