Recently replaced both axle seals, ones that tap into end of tube with new timken seals. Also had axles rebuilt with new seals and bearings. surface of axle where seals ride were good. Taped seals in very carefully and squarely with seal driver. measured distance to make sure seal was set in correct depth. Used a little gasket sealer on outside of seal. wrapped paper around splines when inserting axle to not rip lip. Added a little grease to rear of seal and checked to make sure the spring on the inside of the seal had not popped out during installation. I have driven the car 50 miles and one side leaks a little and the other side leaks a huge amount with fluid down inside of tire and all over floor. Someone suggested maybe a blocked vent, anyone see that before? Any other ideas or tips for when I put the new seals in?

thanks

A blocked vent or way overfull fluid will overwhelm even new seals...I'd look to the vent first.

My guess is the little spring that keeps the seal tight to the axle rolled off when you reinstalled the axle. I changed a seal twice before I realized what was going on. When I installed the 3rd one I filled the back of the seal where the spring is with grease to keep it on there. No leaks so far.

Edit: I didn't see you said you tried the grease trick already. Sorry.

I had the same trouble with the spring, but thanks to a Moparts post, caught it and corrected the problem.

For a leak of that magnitude I'd suspect the spring popped off or the seal got bent or not in square but you did everything spot on. Probably have to R&R them & I'd pack the rear of the seal full with vaseline or grease to keep the spring in place and I use a driver with an OD as large as will fit so it bears on the outermost OD of the seal and drive it in with as few strokes with a BFH as I can so a good whack each time EDIT get the seal barely started but firmly in there square then as recommended whack it good till it's seated and if it starts to get cocked sideways use a round flat piece of stock with a drift and move the drift to the high side to knock that side in further to even it up then switch back to the BFH/centered driver

When I drive those seals in, I use a socket made for 4 wheel drive lock nut on 1/2 ton Dodge trucks. Perfect fit inside the axle housing and the O/D of the seal. Make sure the seal is driven in until it hits the raised stop in the housing.
