What kind of percentages differences would you expect between a warm recently run and a cold motor that hasn't run in a month?

my experience has been that a fairly fresh engine with good sealing varies little; but an engine with some wear and tear will have a greater degree of hot/cold variance.

Motor leaked 8 to 11 cold today...36 passes. Down at least 150 hp from timeslips...baffling..dyno next.

I dont know that 8-11% leakdown on a cold engine would alarm me, especially with nothing to compare it to. As for the performance look at the valvetrain very closely. Those leakdown numbers dont show any glaring issue in cylinder seal to me at least..

**Edit, I need a typing class

I was surprised to see those numbers considering the amount of power loss..gotta look elsewhere. Dyno soon with MY MSD and coil.

i'd have to agree with this. the engine hot may go 5%. i'd look at something else, maybe fuel delivery.

BG 400 checks 1 gal in 14 sec at carb. Swapped Dominators,plugs,timing,valves...starts good, sounds crisp pulls like a good 383 not a 820 hp 500".

The leakdown is not that bad for standard file fit rings, however, if they are zero gaps, that's real bad. But I would look at the oil filter first if you've lost that much power, to make sure nothing in the engine is suffering. If it were a fuel problem, I would think it would fall on it's face at WOT.

Do the leakdown test agian, try rocking the crankshhaft back and forth a tiny bit(no more then 5 BTDC or 5 ATDC )and then remove the valve covers and tap(hard) the rocker arms with a dead blow rubber hammer or plastic mallet while the pressure is in the cylinders and see if it helps seal the valves better cold, sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't If it still leaks with the same percentage maybe it is time to look elsewhere Hows the converter

The convertor was our first suspect but that wasn't it. Next was the MSD start retard but comes in to full 37deg at 1000rpm. We plan a valve spring test before the dyno but they're Comp 948 springs [332 and 949] ,could be down some but plenty of spring. We suspect MSD or coil or wiring in the car now.

Leakdown tests are like compression tests, without a history ( on a particular engine ) interpreting the results can be "gray" at best - unless you have a major problem somewhere. Comparing hole to hole would be better on a "lone" test IMO. In the 70's, an leak less than 20% was acceptable by most OEM's.
