Thinking of upgrading to a dana or more stout 9" in my dart before I go out and blow this one up. I'm paranoid mostly because the 496 is night and day different from the old 383, and I've read too many stories on this board with diff carnage. I posted this on the WiW board and it just sat there, so I figure I'll ask you guys in Q&A Here's the nuts on it: - Factory cone type posi, new bearings, 742 case - 3.91 gears (make a little noise at cruise, but I hear 3.91's typically are noisy) - Moser axles (not gun drilled super ones) with green bearings - new brakes, I believe 11" (bought backing plates at the pick n pull and all the rest new) What would you ask? Has been well taken care of and hasn't been out to the track yet behind my 496. Like I said I'm paranoid, and don't have a trailer LOL Eric

The 8.75 came from the factory in some automatic Hemi cars. That in it's self should be a testament as to the strength of the differential.
I used to agree and say they were in front engine TF dragsters behind blown hemis, but you gotta remember that the biggest tire hanging on the ends of them in that B body were maybe 6 inches wide, and the track prep and tire compounds were slippery enough to Different ball game today.

This car is nearly 3500 lbs, and I know this 496 makes more than 500 ft lbs of torque, and is built to leave hard (small ports, 250@.050 cam, 10.5:1)
I may be paranoid, but to me its an accident waiting to happen. Also, I will be driving it to the track and back so I don't mind overbuilding a little bit to be sure I can get it home.
As far as racing goes, I will probably do 10-20 races a year once I have things dialed in. This includes wed nights and big events in the spring and fall here. Right now it's WAY to hot in nor-cal for me. I'd rather ride my bike.
I emailed dr diff on this as well, maybe he'll chime in here. I don't doubt it can be done on a 8.75, but I'd rather spend a little bit now to ensure I don't go hard left into the wall .7 sec into my run

I'm going with a 543" stroker and not worried about an 8-3/4 with stock axles. Unless you're beating on it all the time (full race schedule) then it should be fine.
Do you have any upgrades done to yours currently? And also if you don't mind what's your current combo? I half-posted this to see what other people are running. I haven't ruled myself out as being paranoid yet but if I'm going to sell the rear, I think it'd be better of me to do it before I go start hammering on it

Eric Go see Quicktree about 8 3/4 rear ends. He will give you an objective opinion on this matter..... I'm just kidding, I think $600 to $700 is very fair price Mike

In stock form the 9" isn't any stronger than the 8 3/4, so if you want better, then go with the Dana 60.
yea, I was thinking if I could find an upgraded 9" that would work, that would be a viable alternative to a 60. 60's are kinda rare in small a-body widths though, so I am really feeling like going with the new made to order moser 60 would be the best bet for my money, and my mechanic's labor (me)
Thanks all for the input. I know this is a road many have been down before, and I'd rather lean on those with experience than gain my own the hard way

The 8 3/4 is a tough axle to destroy, but a hard hitting 496 will eventually do it with good traction, and enough torque. Put a dana 60 in there, either a Moser, Strange or even a cut down early 70's truck 60 with good internal components, and it will take years abuse from that stroker motor. I would also be concerned about the drive shaft and u-joints, maybe upgrade to a larger diameter driveshaft and 1350 series u-joints with billet yokes from Mancini or someone. 3.91 742 case cone type SG $400 - $450 A-body 8 3/4 housing $150 - $200 Moser a-body axles w/green brngs $100 - $150 11" drum brakes w/new parts $100 - $150 I'd start around $850 to $900 and see what happens, you may have to part it out to maximize your return, a nicely built A-body 8 3/4 shouldn't be that hard to sell. It's easier to come down in price than go back up.

or rebuild it with stronger quality parts..
the 8.750 uses less hp then the 9in, and is much lighter then the 60,
