overcharging problem #109281

My friend has a 72 Dodge challenger that has a problem of constant overcharging of the battery/electrical system..it has the electronic conversion...he has replaced the alternator,ballast resistor,and votage regulator with no luck...if anyone has any ideas on what to do next, He would surely appreciate it.

Explain what you mean by over charging. Is it running the battery dry or just the gauge siitng on the charge side?

its "cooking" the battery...you can smell it boiling and if you drive it for too long of a distance...it fires the battery and he has replaced 2 so far..

I would suspect VR not grounded good or bad VR.

What color is the voltage regulator. I'll assume it came with the conversion kit.....if it's "blue"...that's your problem,....constant output regulator

Why would a "constant output" regulator cause this problem?

Take your meter (you do have one?) and with the veh. running on a good fast idle (slow cruise) check one probe RIGHT ON the regulator case, the other proble RIGHT ON the battery neg. terminal. You want the less the better, less than .5V or less. Try with lights on/off, or heater blower.

.5V or more indicates the regulator case is not truely grounded to the battery case.

Could be a bad regulator.

Check the "Voltage sense" line at the regulator. It will be the one that reads battery or ign voltage. You should read the same voltage at the regulator as you do at the battery within a couple of tenths of a volt.

I have seen a number of conversions where the "sense" line was erroneously connected to the wrong side of the ballast resistor. This in turn will cause the regulator to only see about 8 volts or less and will cause the regulator to excite the fields in the alternator trying to bring the sense line up to 13.8 to 14.2 V. which results in a FULL CHARGE situation and cooking batteries
