This is a long term project that's been sitting, and it will probably be next spring before I can dig back into it, but want to get some ideas.
This is a 440/ 727 combo, both rebuilt by myself, but its been a few years. This is the first few times its been driven since reassembly, ran on jackstands before but thats it. It has a higher stall converter - (2500 or so if I remember correctly) and a bolt in TCI street/strip valve body. Otherwise stock rebuild. I am aware that my shift and kickdown linkage may not be perfect, but they are close to where they should be, as far as I know.
The first time I ran it, it stayed in first too long, as in sitting at 2500 rpm at very little throttle and no upshift, but did eventually get into 2nd, but no further. This last time I ran it I did not get out of 1st at all. Bout a mile down the road at 20mph.
So, short of tearing everything apart, what can I do / check in the car? My kickdown linkage does not start opening until about 20% throttle, but is close to full at WOT. Would a band being out of adjustment do this? Also, not having driven with this converter before, could it be affecting the way it shifts?
thanks Jim

The list of possibilities is endless but My first guess is a stuck governor valve since it's been sitting a while. You should have some resemblance of upshift even with the linkage disconnected. Second guess would be the adjustment in the picture. All guesses of course.

unhook the kickdown linkage at the carb...drive it around the block...if it shifts and it should shift quickly ...then that kickdown linkage or throttle pressure linkage as it is really called.. is incorrect..

Disconnect the TP linkage at the transmission lever and be sure the lever is full forward then see if it will shift...if it does the linkage is the problem.
