I seem to have a weak accel pump & can't seem to find anything making it not work right. My dad was a mechanic for Chrysler back in the day & he said those leather pumps frequently didn't work as well. They just made it a standard practice to replace them with a rubber one & it typically fixed the problem.

use an edelbrock. when i took the 6-pak off my 69 r/t and put the 4bbl stuff back on i used an edelbrock pump plunger and shooter. works great.

OE avs? Run it for a minute on a level surface & take out the metering rods/hangar assy's & take the top off & check float level then take the AP plunger out of the air horn & push it by hand into the AP well & see if it kicks out a good squirt from the nozzle. You can run a screwdriver around the inside of the leather cup to expand it but if it's really worn then as said replace it & get the right dia cup. A good visual & go from there

Thanks! I'll get a 1470 pump from the local Jeg's & soak the old one in a cup of oil just in case the 1470 doesn't work out.

Check and be sure the side of the carb where the pump plunger goes is not rough or gunked up from sitting that will destroy the neoprine plunger I prefer the leather as I found they can be worked with oil to get more life out of them
Forgot check the one way valve by accel pump make sue it has not gone bad

The plunger bore is tapered. If you try to jamb the leather pump in there dry, it can turn inside out and be useless (think sexual connotations here ). Get the leather seal soft and lubed, and be careful it does not turn "inside out" during a hasty assembly. Inside out will not produce the required pump squirt.

Okay, I tried the Edelbrock 1470 pump & it wouldn't squirt fuel at all. I tried operating it manually (with the top off the carb) & I can't see any reason for it to not push fuel. Did you guys have to do anything to get the pump to work? Also, what does the oil soak do for the leather? I can see it making for a better installation, but wouldn't the fuel wash the oil out of the leather in a short period of time?

yes but the oil relaxes the leather so it will conform to the bore better so it ends being reshaped before the gas washes the oil out. Are you feeling pressure (tension) build as you manually push the plunger down the bore? If so take off the AP squirter and take out the brass check valve that's under it & see if you get a squirt now EDIT I would expand the leather edge with a small screwdriver so it grips the bore better, just run it around the inside edge MORE EDIT is there a supposed to be a check ball in the floor drain of the bore? Cause there a direct passage from the bore outlet to the squirter, nothing can go wrong there unless it's totally plugged & never seen that (yet) but the brass needle under the squirter can get glued down from evaporation & block flow but you're going to take that out for a check

Thanks for the plunger/oil explanation. That makes sense to me.

I took the carb off the car a couple of months ago & the pump plunger walls were pretty smooth (polished them a little anyway with some 800 grit wetordry). I removed the squirter nozzles & the passage from the plunger chamber & seems clear & the check valve is also functioning properly.

I picked the carb up at a swap meet a few years ago and rebuilt it about 2-yrs ago. Since the plunger was left sitting dry in the carb for a couple of years before it was used, could that have caused the problem?

yes that is pretty common for the AP plunger cups to dry/shrink. Luckily new ones are cheap just gotta get the right one and they can be hard to find on occaision EDIT If this is an OE AVS which will have 3 step rods/tall pri jets you can get an Eddy strip kit (2 step/short jets) so you can play with the main metering as all OE AVS's were emission era carbs & will respond good to tweaking. Pick the performer strip kit with sizes close to what the AVS has

800 grit seems too course to me, I would be concerned using the finest Scotchbrite pad.

Fine steel wool & blow it out well. On the plunger, personally have better luck with leather than these new 'rubber' material ones.

I wonder if E10 (gasahol) is causing probs with them

I guess the reasonable thing to try at this point would be to get a new leather pump & soak it in oil for a couple of days prior to installation. Beyond that, I guess I'm at the point of replacing the carb.

after you get the new plunger installed successfully, look carefully at how fast it reacts when you move the throttle (you can do this on the workbench). That is what the 3 different holes are for on the pump arm. The adjustment can also adjust the pump stroke (longer stroke, more gas), but at the same time, the plunger needs to start moving instantly when you touch the throttle. If there is a lag in the plunger movement, it will show up when the engine is running as a slight bog when you tip the throttle.
