'01 Durango R/T. 46RE.

Just curious, thought I read that the anti-drainback valve (which I believe is inline not far from the trans cooler) sometimes has a tendency to get plugged or restrict flow somewhat. Is there any truth to this story? Is it necessary? Any downside to removing it? Trans runs fine, usually around 70 degF above ambient in cruise, but warms up in stop and go traffic - 160-170 degF.

TIA,
Marq

I have a 98 Durango and ended up having to replace mine, due to the fact that if the truck sat too long I would have to wait for the pump to refill the converter before the truck would move.

The TC drainback valve is misnamed, nothing can prevent the TC from draining back. The valve actually prevents the high-mounted cooler in the radiator tank from draining through the TC.

Having said that, removing the valve won't hurt anything but it'd be a good idea to make the first startup of each day in Neutral instead of Park.

Yes, that stupid checkball is responsible for killing a lot of transmissions because of how it aids the accumulation of crap in it and in the cooler. A lot of people remove it and it's not a problem.
