Or just nice to have, if the budget allows?

Going roller for the first time and wondering if I should have another set of lifters to keep on hand as spares.

If one fails, you'll probably be doing more than just a cam/lifter swap. I only send mine off to be checked/rebuilt when I'm freshening up the motor.
I have 2 engines w/ roller cams and the only 2 sets of lifters I own are in those engines.

I have a couple of spares... when I run drag week I
will carry both of them.... I'm hoping for the Murphy's
law theory... if you have it, it wont break

How often should they be checked or rebuilt?
Kevin

FWIW, in my case I'm freshening up engine #1 with the new roller combination while completing a ground-up build of engine #2, with the assumption that the same roller cam & lifters will be moved from #1 to #2 when the time comes to put #2 into service.

I'm planning to do an inspection every 3000 miles of street use. Rebuilding depends on their observed condition at that time.

In case you're not aware of this, not all roller lifters can be rebuilt. You need to check w/ the manufacturer (or reseller) on whether that's even possible w/ their product.

I have never needed spares even though I had plenty, murphy's law?
If one fails your gonna have to pull apart the motor to get the rollers out in most cases.

I have not had a lifter failure, but pushrod & ball studs failures I have had and then the lifter pops out. I will be doing the next engine with a screen in the valley to catch any parts before they hit somthing important.

I run the screen in my engines... has saved a few
parts(I use to break push rods and adjuster pretty
often till I figured out the problem)
