Was driving my 318 Coronet to work today. Its been running like a top the past few days since changing carbs... anyway, it died in the middle of an intersection and refused to start. I pushed it to a parking lot to work on it.

Tried everything I could think of to get it to fire, and it was getting lots of fuel, and spark, but would hardly sputter... and even those sputters were only once in a while... starting fluid didnt even make it kick.

Did a compression test just to see what was going on... got 30psi on #1 and #8, and and 50-60 on all the rest.

Does this indicate that the valves and seats are junk? Timing chain jump?

Im thinking that its time to get myself another engine...

Advance the distributor approx 20 degrees and see if it starts. Sounds like the cam timing is way off.

Sounds to me like your plastic timing gear went south. If so make sure to check for bent valves along with the chain and sprockets. Mopar valves will hit pistons if the chain goes.

sounds like timing chain.
You can try swapping in just the chain and gears. That's the low-buck high-labor way.
Most of the time, you bend valve(s).
The more money way is to pull the motor, have the heads done, and check the bottom end.
If the car is not valuable with the numbers matching, of it's already not numbers matching, a good used or rebuilt can be quicker...

If you dont what to pull the motor I would imagine
a leakdown test would tell you right away if valves
were bent. I think I would go that route before a
tear down.

Hey Guys!

Yeah, the 318 isnt the original engine for this car... actually its of unknown-mileage, we pulled it from a '70 Coronet parts car that has been sitting for a long time.

I'll take this as a sign that I shouldnt have put a small block into this car, and install the 383 that is sitting in the corner of my dad's shop.

At least but preferably a 400 or 440 with a stroker kit & alum heads and...

Did I mention that the 383 has 8-71 and 2 stages of nitrous on it?

Haha, I wish!

Thanks guys!

Hey Guys!

Decided that I would check the t-chain before pulling the 318.

Chain is toast... pulled the chain straight off of the gears without having to remove anything.

I don't have a leakdown tool, but pulled the rockers, and put an air fitting into the spark plug holes to listen to where the air is leaking from, and there is minimal noise coming from the carb, or the exhaust... maybe the valves survived? :-)

For $25, Ill throw a new t-chain in and see where I'm at.

Throw another chain on it, and then fire it up and check the intake vacuum. Once warmed up, do another compression test

If you've got bent valves, the vacuum guage will jump around quite a bit. If the vacuum guage stays pretty steady, run the compression test to confirm cylinder pressure is still good all the way around.

If compression looks good....run it.

Not without pulling the oil pan you won't or at least shouldn't. Where do you think all the debrie from the plastic gear is? It is in the pan and plugging the oil sump screen. Your pistons must be way down in the hole. Very seldom is it seen for a chain to strip the gear and not at the very least put eye brows in the piston tops, let along bend a few valves.

Ah, good point.

I've done just the chain swap in the past, with no long term ill effects...but getting that plastic out of the pan would be a very good idea. If you're just gonna run the car for a few months before swapping in that 383...I'd not get too worried about pulling the pan. If you're planning on running this 318 for a while, pulling the pan might not be such a bad idea.

It's not that hard to pull the pan and clean it out while you are at it. You could always pour a gallon of diesel into the front of the pan with the oil drain plug out to get rid of the small pieces of nylon gear.

Hey Guys!

Swapped in the new t-chain... after moving the timing way back from where it was running before, it fired right up. :-) I haven't had a chance to get things running right though, or investigate vacuum or compression readings.

Haven't pulled the oil pan yet either, but might do that tomorrow just to be safe.

This 318 was literally 1/2 an our away from being tossed on the junk pile, but appears to have been saved with $23 worth of parts, and a few hours labour!
