ok I'm confused... The rules for the NHRA track next to me are; The Snell K98 and Snell 95 helmets are expired and no exceptions will be made for use of this model of helmet if you are running 13.99 and quicker in the 1/4 mile or 8.59 in the 1/8th mile. Acceptable helmets are the Snell 2000 and Snell 2005. Please also remind your fellow racers to check their helmets as well!! Thanks. So a snell 2010 M2010 are not accpetable? The IHRA track allows snell 95. I don't want to buy helmets every couple years...

Helmet is legal 12 years from the date on the helmet. 2005's are good until Jan 1st 2017, 2010's are legal until Jan 1st 2022. M or SA2000 helmets will no longer be legal after this season, not at NHRA/IHRA tracks anyways. M series helmets are designed for motorcycle use and are legal to I believe 10.0 or 135mph SA helmets are designed for automotive use and have Nomex and other fire retardant materials making them legal for single digit ET's I recommend http://www.helmetcity.com/ Racer owned, operated and ran.

First let's clear up some mis-information. The M and SA are not designations being phased out. They are indications of the "SFI" Spec. The M is not for Motorcycle, but yes, an SA helmet does have a fire rated inner liner. The '95 and '98 are no longer NHRA "approved". The 2000 rated helmets are only good until 1/1/12 (this new years day). A 2005 helmet (either M or SA) is approved until 1/1/2017, and the 2010 helmets are O.K. til 1/1/2022. From the 2010 NHRA book Quote:
10:7 HELMET As outlined under Class Requirements, drivers in all classes, including motorcycles, must wear a helmet meeting Snell or SFI Specifications.
SFI Spec 31.1A = Snell SA, open-face helmet SFI Spec 31.2A = Snell SA full-face helmet SFI Spec 41.1A = Snell M, open-face helmet SFI Spec 41.2A = Snell M full-face helmet
Full-face helmet mandatory on all cars 9.99 or quicker. See individual Class Requirements for additional requirements. Shield mandatory 7.49 and quicker. Drivers of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and E.T. cars (13.99 or quicker) must use a helmet meeting Snell SA2000, M2000, SA2005, M2005, SA2010, M2010, or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 31.1/2005, 41.1A, 41.2A, or 41.1/2005 Specs. Drivers in supercharged, front engine, open-bodied cars and Funny Cars must wear a helmet meeting Snell SA2000, SA2005, SA2010, or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, or 31.1/2005 Specs. See Class Requirements. Structural modifications to helmet/shield are prohibited. Cutting of helmet or helmet shield prohibited. Helmet must remain as manufactured, except for paint scheme/graphics and permitted nonstructural driver modifications to helmet shield as set forth below. Taping or similar modifications to the helmet shield made by the driver that reduce the driver’s field of vision, and are deemed safe by driver in the driver’s judgment, are permitted at this time so long as the driver can demonstrate to technical inspectors that the purpose of the modification is to reduce distraction in the driver’s field of vision. By using such a modification to the helmet shield, the driver acknowledges and agrees that the driver deems such modification safe in the driver’s judgment consistent with the driver’s obligations in Section 1, Participant Agreements and Administrative and Procedural Rules, set forth above, and that the modification does not impair or interfere with the safe operation of the driver’s vehicle. See General Regulations 7:8.
