I have a 2001 300M, 146k miles. I'm getting the P0740 code, indicating a problem with the converter locking up. It runs fine except for not feeling the converter lock. Is there a way to determine if the problem is the converter or the solenoid pack, or sometihng else?

Thanks

This might help

Since this appears to be something the computer recognises as a speed difference between the engine and the input sensor, it is not a circuit short/open like a lot of codes. If you do not have a circuit code, it's more likely that it's a hydraulic issue. The best way is probably taking it to a good transmission shop and have them check the TCC pressure if possible. That will indicate if the solenoid and pressure are good, and the converter is bad, or there is not enough pressure, indicating a leak or bad solenoid.

I can tell you that most of the time on the Mopar scanner the code will say "Solenoid circuit" if its electrical or if the PCM thinks so. If it just says "Lockup RPM wrong" most of the time its mechanical. Thats not 100% but it is true most of the time. Whenever the code had the words "Electrical Circuit" in the code it would usually be an electrical problem. This code can be caused by either. I did have a few times I had to replace the pump , input shaft and the front drum as it had a sealing problem in that area causing internal leakage keeping the converter from locking up. Ron
