Wondering how many of you guys are running flat tappet cams nowadays? I am planning on changing the comp hyd in my 528 hemi and thinking of using a solid. Have buddys telling me that it is old tech and with the oils available today will possibly have problems. So what is your thought on running a solid cam?

MP557. Love my sewing machine, and I do run the lash tighter than what MP reccommends. Been in the car 4+ years now. Broke it in with GM EOS and 15/40 dino oil...no issues and I will be goin with another solid cam when its time to freshen/rebuild...

I am running a solid flat, and my next motor will also. You need to break in the cam with just the outer valve springs then install the inner springs. There are plenty of high zinc oils out there to use, Brad Penn, VR1, Royal Purple, Amsoil. As far as old school tech, these are old school motors! They like old school tech!

I run a solid flat with roller rockers. I use Rotella T 10w30 and a bottle of STP for lube. I couldn't justify the extra cost of a roller.

I ran a NF-62 Ultradyne solid (270 adv./243 @ .050, .548" for years in a street/strip 9;1 440. Checking lash was a waste of time since it never needed adjusting and with .016" lash it was quiet(not that I care). Cam is still in use in my brothers car and has to have 100000 miles on it by now I got a .620" Ultradyne solid that is going in an SR headed 470 one of these years.

I run a solid flat tappet cam custom ground by Dwayne Porter. It was nitrided and I broke it in about 3 months ago. I used Valveoline racing oil and the comp oil additive with the zinc in it. Broke in fine and has been zero problems. Ron

During my previous build of the 73 Duster, I elected to go with a solid, flat tappet cam in the SB.. Within a month, I wiped one lobe and had to tear the motor apart.. Since then, I've gone to the solid roller and have had no problems.. (knock on wood)

Don, it would be you with a story of despair and destruction! I have had good luck in the past with solid cams and thinking about stepping the power up on the gtx a bit. Look for me in Sac this weekend as I think I may take a run or two down the track and see if I remember how to drive the thing.

I've had a Hughes flat tappet solid in my small block for about 15 years. I've never had anything but Mobil1 10w30 in it, no additive ever. I did like 440civic said and broke it in with just the outer springs and then added the inners. It's 140 on the seat and 440 over the nose, .672 lift with 1.6 rockers. That's more pressure by about 110 over the nose on the cam than Hughes recommended but it would valve float past 7500, I wanted to twist this thing to 8000 so I added more valve spring. It's been in 2 different blocks with the same lifters and I still haven't had a problem. I've since gotten a roller of near identical specs for my new short block, why I'm not sure after all the hassle this has been, but this cam will still see duty when my kid puts it back together for his car.

Forgot to add I broke in my cam on just the outer springs also. Then I used this tool to install the inner springs on the car. This tool worked great and made it easy installing the inners on the car. Ron

I went Crane solid roller, with the 66550-16 lifters. With the lack of ZDDP in the oil, I have already gone through 3 jeep flat tappet cams, and the diesel oil is starting to get rid of it also. The next best thing is Phillips 25w60 XC aviation oil, uses other additives for flat tappet cams. Tim

i like flat tappets. solid or hydraulic. i've run some pretty big ones, all on the street and the strip. let's see, i've had... uh... mmm. it's been 35 years? ida know how many engines. a lot. one lobe on a .508 in a small block back in the early eighties was just starting to go away. caught it by accident doing other work. that was after a couple hundred runs and 45,000 miles. me and flat tappets get along real good.

What brand of spring remover is that? Does it work on #7 valves?

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead
