So I still dont get it....Does the coupler come off with the column or with the box? Do I pry it upward from in between the box and coupler or do I hit it downward (towards front of car) along the shaft? Or do I clean out the gunk inside and release it somehow? The problem is that I have no idea what is holding it in place. Are there clips, nuts, or what? Btw, the box is not connected to anything. The engine and K frame are out, so if I pull the column back, the whole unit comes with it (box, center link, pitman, idler, etc.)
The coupler sometimes has a very small rollpin in it that keeps the coupler from coming off. But if you have the big roll pin out then the coupler should come off and stay with the column.
BUT you have the steering box hanging off the end of the column unsupported ??? I hope it's not a power box of you at least have it tied up ...

I have the box tied and propped up John...it did fall once and just hang there for about 10 seconds before I got it propped up again, do you see a problem with that? Like the gearshaft may have got screwed up? So I just pry b/w the box and coupler and it stays with the column....Ill give it a shot.
the coupler can go either way , but if it won't pull off the end of the shaft then it is the kind with the small rollpin that keeps it from coming fully apart without removing the pin.
The weight of the power steering box could potentially bend the steering shaft ???
