I am preparing the installation of the windshield and rear window on my 70 Challenger.
Car has new paint and new trim clips...
What size diameter of butyl tape is used on each window (I see 3/8" and 5/16" advertised). Or....am I headed in the wrong direction?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Some folks have luck with the buytal tape, but I had a glass guy install my front and rear windshields using comercial grade urethane. He used a foam tape "dam" to control the depth of the windshield into the pinchweld and the flow of the urethane, and primed both the glass and the frame.

The urethane holds the windshield in the frame much stronger than with the tape ever could. When properly done, it looks original and the trim fits perfect. Watching him and his son work, it's obvious there is an art to it.

He stated the trim has to go on immediately to help position the depth of the glass, so that it fits correctly with the trim and has the right gap etc.

5/16 is what the factory used. I have used 5/16 square butyl tape on front and rear glass of several Challengers, and had good results and no leaks.Use the primer, even on new paint...and start in the center on the bottom. Good luck.

Thank you. I will see if any auto-glass company's will do it this way (butyl tape), if not I will be looking to buy the tape and do it myself.

Any favorite brands?

I had a guy from Safelite tell me that their company won't do butyl. They claim that it takes away from the rigidity of the unibody construction.
I countered the car was engineered for butyl, the unibody is stiff enough without it and if he wasn't going to use it, leave the windshield and I will do it myself. He relented and the windshield went in just fine. He then put urethane all around it to seal it further. I put the trim on as soon as he left and it looks good and has the proper look with the butyl. I do not see how they can use just urethane and get the right depth so the trim fits right.
I used 3M from YearOne for the windshield. For the rear window, I used the same number off the YearOne box and got it locally with no shipping cost.

I found this product- though I cannot find a smaller quantity (than 12 roll set). To your point, the last statement is in red on the website (meaning a 70 Challenger did not have urethane). You would think the auto-glass folks would work with us on this...

CRL Butyl Autoglass Tape has been developed for the installer to meet his specific needs. It is easily compressible and tacky, but won't flow out of the pinchweld. It's the one tape that gives you the support, sealing and strength you need for leak-proof installations and no call-backs. Controlled rebound allows proper molding fit.

CRL Butyl Autoglass Tape has been proven to be one of the finest tapes on the market.

Feet per Roll: 15 ft (45 m)
Size: 3/8 in (9.5 mm) Square
Case Qty: 12 Rolls

Important Note:
Butyl tapes should not be used where OEM has installed the automotive glass with urethane.
Please consult the OEM guidelines for your installation.

Try an automotive paint store. If they don't have 3M 5/16 square, they should be able to order it for you.You will need 2 kits. One for the front, and the other for the rear.
