Hi all. I'm in need of a little help. I own a 1974 Challenger Rallye, 360/AT. It is an all original car that I'm fortunate to the 2nd owner. I'm putting the Thermoquad back on, replacing a Holley carb. The Thermoquad has an electric choke, and curb idle solenoid that need to be hooked up somewhere. On the right rear side of the intake manifold is a block that says choke, and bat. There are two connections there. The one that says choke is obvious, but where does the electrical connector for the curb idle solenoid go? If anyone out there has a photo of this hookup on a 1974 car with the thermoquad it would be greatly appreciated. I looked at a nicely restored 72 Challenger on Sunday, but it didn't have the idle solenoid on it. Any help would be much appreciated.

What is the number stamped on the drivers rear mounting foot of your carb?

I have a a 1974 Duster360 with original engine and tq on it. The curb idle solenoid gets wired up to one alternator field connection. The factory had a special connector for the one field connection that gets energized when the ignition is turned on. This energizes the curb idle solenoid. Sorry, don't have the car here, otherwise I would take a pic for you . . . check the wiring diagram for your car. . . . hope that helps . . .

Cheers

Mark

Thanks for the reply Mark. The block that has the two connectors on it has the ALT position already wired, which I presume goes to the alternator. I wish I had the wiring diagram for a 74 Dodge. A photo of a stock installation would be a big help of course.

Graham, are you sure that number isn't 6453S? I'm pretty sure 6435S is not a good number. I can check the my factory parts book later but, the transposition, 6453S, is for a automatic tranny 360 with federal emissions.
The carb solenoid is energized from a harness laying along the inside of the passenger side valve cover. You'd have to look at a wiring diagram to see exactly how it is connected, but the molded connector has an odd shape. There was a related thread about a 74 Road Runner not too long ago. The thread title was not obvious - something like, "answer the quiz"????

Here is scan of wiring diagram for my Duster, but I looked at the other wiring diagrams for the rest of the carlines, and it appears the 360 4bbl (E58) were all wired same way . . . hope this helps . . .

Cheers,

Mark

Not from the factory anyway, my question about the carb number was leading to the same conclusion, it sounds like it's a replacement, likely a 9800 series Super-Quad.

6453S. Maybe he is mistaking a solenoid for a choke?

The choke is operated by intake manifold heat but also has that electric heat assist that plugs into a temp switch threaded into the rear passenger part of the intake. At least that's how mine was. I tried wiring that electric assist up direct one time and a full 12v flicked the choke open WAY too soon.

My thanks to all who helped with this question, especially Runnin 74 and a12Rag, who supplied the wiring diagram.
Problem is now solved.

Ok, looks like you have an electric DIVORCED choke which is not actually part of the carb itself.
