I've got a 8 3/4 in my B Body that howls and whines. Here are the symptoms:

1. It's constant but much worse after it gets warm.

2. It's worse between 50 - 70 mph. Hardly notice below 40 mph.

3. It doesn't change under accel or decell.

4. The rear has a aftermarket 3.55 ring and pinion set up by a pro.

5. The axles have original bearings and have about 100k on them.

What do you think???

Have you checked the end play on the adjuster side? Mine does it every few years and I tighten the bearing play and it goes away. Of course I need to do new bearings all the way around with seals but Ive been to lazy.

Mine was more of a low groan.

Describe the noise.

Gear howl is usually a high-pitched "eeeee" sound, that comes and goes with RPM on float. It rarely occurs on drive and coast simultaneously, unless the backlash is set too tight.

A bad wheel bearing will rumble at all speeds.

A bad U-joint will squeak, growl or vibrate.

I posted this a while ago but have not been able to get this rear end to stop howling. The noise is a constant "EEEEEEEEE". I didn't add any sure grip additive, but that's never helped me with noise in the past. Should I chalk this up to an aftermarket gear?

Not sure if this is relevant or not but it crossed my mind: did it start acting up from day 1 (after being setup) or later on down the line?
