My sons Dakota will not start. He drove home from work running fine. Started to work and will not start. I primed with gas, it was a no go, so I changed the coil. It still just turns over with no fire. I pulled the cap and the rotor is rotating. Anyone point me in the next direction I need to check. It is a 5.9 truck.

Check for spark, if no spark, you can put a scanner on it, check to see if you show the RPMs while cranking. It should show around 125 RPM. If so, your crank position sensor is working. If not, it has more than likely failed. Of course it could be a computer problem or something else, but this sensor problem is common.

It is...sometimes just looking at it the wrong way can cause a problem. I've been through two of them since kicking the EFI altogether.

Just checked the codes. P0340 and P1391. What does that mean? Son said check engine light has has been coming on intermittently. Thanks for your help.

The codes concern a problem in the camshaft position sensor circuit and crank position sensor. There are alot of troubleshooting steps, and several different possible causes that include the computer, wiring and sensors. If it were mine, I would change the CPS, as it is such a common problem. You really need to have a manual, and alot a patience for testing. you can change alot of parts cheaper than paying a shop to test and diagnose.

For information, the CPS is about $45 for auto trans and $74 for manual trans at Autozone.

Since it was throwing both codes I changed the camshaft position sensor first as it was the easiest to change. Truck started and ran well. Starts better/faster than it has in a while. Reset computer and will check in a few days. If it resets the 0340 code I will change the crank sensor. Any of the parts we change don't owe us a thing as the truck has 220000 miles on it and was running on the original parts. We bought the truck new and probably the best most reliable transportation I have ever owned. This is the first time it has ever let us down. Thanks for the help guys.
