Just broke in cam with no cam related problems but had to pull a head so fix a bad seat and discovered a flaw on the side of lifter right at the face wher it makes some contact with cam lobe.
Should I replace 1 lifter and break it in or replace cam & lifters
This is getting to be too much like

Maybe you could post a pic? If it's on the face of the lifter I wouldn't use it,but the cam should never be closer than .015" to the edge of the lifter and most don't push that far.

I would not worry about that, the lobe doesnt even touch the edge.

Most will run it,not me. As stated the cam lobe will not use the edge but when I see a casting issue(I have been casting for over 20 years)I'd be worried about the problems below what you can see. :twocents

You asked what brand lifter. If he said X would that mean Y was the bestest? Im f'ing with you as it's clear you don't know. Lot's of crap being sold to the public, but it's not limited to 1 company.I didn't ask a question, just gave an answer. Does that make sense?

thought I would contact mfgr monday and giv em a chance at suppling a new lifter before I blast them on a public forum.
With damage that close to the face im more than a little concerned.
But will that one lobe handle a second breakin cycle
Any new lifter is prob better than this one

I'd inspect all the lifters for any casting defects. Yes,the company should take them back and replace them. If you want to PM me the company that would be interesting. Thanks

I bought a mopar performance cam that had lifters that were chipped on the edges. I sent it back and the next one was the same way. I switched to a comp cam.

I could not use that lifter no way, with a successful break in that lobe will be in good condition to handle a new lifter. Lifters get replaced all the time for many different reasons.

Cant beat that . I would suggest makeing sure the lifters have enough clearance in the bores. Mockup & raise each lifter off the lobe w your finger/let go & it should fall back onto it's respective lobe w a resounding "thunk" on brake kleened and lightly WD40 lubed bores/lifters. 25 yrs ago that cam co that moved to Florida (forget who) paid me several hundred $$ to go back into an eng from their bad merchandise after I sent them an itemized/detailed bill. that's unheard of

First, now they are a motorcycle company, the business being sold off under bankruptcy or something like it.

Second, for the poster way up the thread, the edge better NOT contact the lobe or it's goodbye engine.

The whole business about Chrysler larger diameter lifters allowing a more radical lobe shape is that with the extra diameter the cam designers can get faster acceleration rates while keeping the lobe away from the lifter edge.

Crane Cams does have a line of motorcycle products that are manufactured and distributed through S&S Cycle in Viola, WI. They are well known for their innovative and high quality products. Two of the owners of S&S (who are real racers and enthusiasts, both two-wheeled and four) also own Crane Cams, which manufactures and distributes the automotive pieces that most of you are familar with. You can check cranecams.com for our current offerings and the new 434 page catalog. The Crane Cams quality has been upgraded wherever possible, while inventories and delivery greatly improved since the February 2009 "closing". Regards, Chase
