19 TH Edition of Orlando World Street Nationals Rescheduled to 2012
Carl Weisinger promoter of Orlando Speed World Dragway and the World
Street Nationals announced today that he has decided to reschedule the
19 TH edition of the oldest and most prestigious, quarter-mile all heads up door
slammer event in drag racing until 2012.
“In 36 years of promoting drag races and 18 straight years of
holding the World Street Nationals at Orlando Speed World Dragway
I’ve never had to make a more difficult decision than this one". said
Weisinger. "I know many, as we are, will be disappointed."
"I have talked to several racers and some of them candidly tell me the
economy and the general business environment right now makes committing
the money to prepare the car and travel to Florida a luxury they really have to
consider. Travel costs have escalated tremendously in the last year and their
disposable income has taken a hit. I just don't want to hold the World Street
Nationals event if I think it may not be the premiere door slammer race our fans
and racers have come to expect. The problem certainly isn't the number of spectators.
While many events have struggled we had just over 14,000 paid admissions and
made a decent profit last year. No other similar event that actually sells tickets even
comes close. There are also issues with circumstances that were problems in years
past resurfacing. Some of the classes have been split and split again with a list of rules
it would take a Philadelphia lawyer to decide what the weight should be. There are too many
rules, too many classes, too many short sighted promoters, too many look alike races, too
many series and not enough cars right now to support it all. We'll give it a year a see how it
all shakes out. But, I can tell you this. When we lay out the easy rules, generous pay outs,
awards and gifts for the next World Street Nationals we plan, as always, to make it entertaining
to the spectators and rewarding to the racers and crews. Stay tuned."
