Hello to everyone, this is my first post and I am a new member.

I have a distributor I believe to be 1971 but I don't have a 71 book. Could someone please help me look this up.

NOS dual point distributor
Chrysler part number 3438356
IBS-4019 AS 50

Then I also have the vacuum advance unit, it says
1 Piece
CH803
3514332
LEAD ASSY.
73691 973

Thanks in advance! Mike

my book shows 3438356 is the 440-6 auto trans. dist. minus cap/rotor (replacement) after 01/01/70 B,J,R,W body - the 3514332 is the 71 440-6 vac advancew/retard - welcome aboard

thank you very much for the quick answer. So, this is for 1970 cars not 1971?

Also is it possible for the shaft to have pitting even though it is NOS?

dist. # is for a late 70 build (after 1/1/70 - according to the book) 71 is a 3438577 for both auto and manual - the vac advance # you provided is 440-6 71 only - that shaft doesn't look too NOS to me - pitted pretty bad - was the dist.ina box - any water damage to it if it was ?

What makes you think the part is NOS , that part was very rusted , what does the rest of it look like ?

The distributor looks NOS, all but the shaft. I guess the shaft could have been replaced along the way, but why? Why would someone rob an NOS shaft and replace with a pitted one? Are those shafts hardened steel? Are they machined? Here is a pic of the topside of the distributor.

That looks NOS , the shaft must have been in a box that got wet and no one ever dealt with it , one could replace the shaft to make it look like new again.

not looking to stir up a hornets nest here - and hope I'm wrong - and have no problem admitting such - but a few years ago someone was reproing distributor tags, and the one on yours is a little different than the originals I've looked at - the "shoulders" that turn up toward the retaining screw look very sharp - I'm pretty sure one should be rounded - on the left side - I looked long and hard to find a correct one for my car - the tag on my dist. has a rounded shoulder on the left side and is original - are you sure it's nos from a dealer - the 3438356 I believe is a dealer replacement # and not a assembly line #, I think the assembly line # dist. is 3438349...maybe some other members will have some info handy

No, I want to know the truth about this thing.... so if you think the tag might be repop I need to know. I have a few dual points from different years and I took some pics just now that I will add. They don't look too different from the 1970 in question. The coating has worn off or is just different throughout the years. Here is a 67 hemi tag.

the stamping of CHRYSLER looks different in the 440-6 tag as opposed to the others you provided - looks like a block of letters pounded in where the others are nicely spaced out - then again these things were run out ASAP without too much quality control as far as stamping - as evidenced in double taps and missed #'s like other items - do you suspect the tag yourself or the distributor - maybe I AM wrong...

Actually I don't suspect the tag or the distributor. I am hoping someone has seen pitting like this on a shaft and can tell me it is pitting or it is manufacture defect. To get pitting like that you would have to have serious residual rust yes?

The tag should be under the clip.

Now,which one is real ? Not hard to figure out.
