I am a bit confused regarding the external voltage regulator usage with an internally regulated Nippondenso alternator. I have a Nippondenso alternator off a 95 or so Ram, I want to use it on my 73 A-Body.
Seems like the thought is to use the existing two field wires on the new alternator, but I am unsure if I need to rewire around the external voltage regulator or leave it in place????

Does the Denso alt need the external regulator, does it hurt to leave the external regulator "wired in"?
I have read several posts on swapping in a denso alternator, but am still confused on this point.

Any help is appreciated.

I don't think your denso is internally regulated....I have one off a 2000 ram van. it uses external reg, wires exactly like the 60's dual field. Don't forget to add a larger (I used a 4G) wire between positive stud on alt and positive on starter relay.

Is it possible you are confusing volt reg built into pcm vs standalone VR...and calling it internally regulated? I looked at lots of alts in wrecking yards and all the mopar ones of the vintage you speak had two studs for external ...trucks, minivans etc...

I just assumed it was internally regulated. It does have two field lugs, so I guess I'll just hook those up with the existing voltage regulator field wires. Thanks

The late model stuff is still externally regulated. The regulator is built into the ECU.

I use that 90amp alt. on my car with a 70s style voltage reg works great.

I fired it up today and it seems to work fine.

Has anyone resorted to fabbing a heat shield between the headers and the alternator, they seem very close!
