On the rear deck/package shelf of a '69 B-body (GTX in this case) are both sides set up for 6X9 speakers or is one side cut out different???? I should know this and I should just crawl into the trunk and measure it but I know you guys know. For some reason the driver's side looks smaller than the passenger's side????? Thanks.

They should be the same unless the drivers side is set up for the rear defogger. The defogger uses a metal adapter which could make the hole look smaller. Check to see if its in there.

I thought so and now where do I find a 5x8 speaker to match a 6x9

Now do I have to modify the 5x8 speaker mounting holes or drill new holes for the 6x9?

Bummer, what was Chrysler thinking having two different size speakers??????? I wonder what purchasing thought about that.........but I guess if a 6x9 interfered with the rear window defogger then I guess they had to do that but still how many rear window deffogger systems were ordered versus dual rear speakers.

I got a NOS 5x8 speaker long time ago to fit in there because the regular aftermarket 5x8 speakers doesn't fit either on same screw locations. Need new holes. I didn't want to open new holes.

The only logic I can think off on the smaller size driver side is ( based on 3rd gens at least ):

on stereos setup with just one rear speaker the 5x8 allmost matches with the front 4x10 on cone speaker surface, so then the frequency reponse, being front the left and rear the right channel.

when you get dual rear speakers, we get front left, driver side rear left and passenger side 6x9 right channel.

Talking about audio, one speaker size being duplicated, gest the same response than one speaker 1.4 times bigger... let say two 10" gives teh same response than one 14" ( 10 * 1.4 = 14 )

based on that, a 6x9 speaker is aprox the same than two of the other ones...

thats the only I can think of
