was thinking about a new project but has been so long since i built anything other than a 340 stock motor.. interested in building a 700-900hp small block.. but probally will use NOS to acheive the last 200-300hp of that.. not sure which after market block is the way to go and a good set of heads to use.. i dfont want to break the bank on this but a decent build and a bullet proof bottom end is a must.. any info will help...

i notice that they offer a few different deck heights...i am guessing this is to allow for the bigger stroker kits ??? Cam location is not an issue with these small block setups.??? also why the 48*instead of the 59* ??? i notice that indy doesnt have the 360-1 heads on their site anymore.. i use the think those were the best small block heads going.. whats the scoop on a good set of heads.??? thanks...

Well you can go with a W-9 head they're pretty cheap
and they use the extra bolts for better clamping of
the head... you might want the taller block... watch
for what crank journal size... theres a few different
sizes

if ur interested i know someone with all u need..but 700hp pump gas! would be easy with w 7 8 or 9 cylinder heads ..block's right now are about $2300 they go up an down in price...top end with t&D rockers 2500 for intake heads and rockers

interested in knowing how much HP the 340 blocks can handle.??? there are several to choose from.. 340 resto block and r3 race block and siemese and non...anyone have a chart showing the ratings.??

All the new r3's look like resto blocks. Forget the cheap aspect of it all though, you more than likely will break the bank . for complete, ported W series heads and t&d rockers you are looking at 5K alone (includes buying the heads and NEW rockers). 2500~ish for a block, and 48* roller cam with offset lifters are a ton. Not to mention the custom headers and pistons.

i've got a complete R-3 based combo with 360-1 heads, Harland Sharp rockers, all good parts in the rotating assembly. custom pan, billit (not chinese) valve covers, electric waterpump, etc. etc. if it's something your interested in let me know. it's all new stuff. it's not a not a pump gas motor and we're not "giving" it away, but if your serious it's 700hp n/a capable with the right cam.

R-3 has a ton of variants. wet sump , dry sump , short deck , tall deck , 48 degree , 59 degree.
The 48 degree is preferred for high r.p.m. use due to better push rod geometry. Siamese blocks will allow a larger bore.
The tall deck will allow you to run a longer stroke and rod without having to run a super tight ring package.
W-9 heads are what I am going with , and they also make a 59 degree version of those that has the valley side head bolt bosses machined away for push rod clearance.
I think the outer head bolt bosses are also cleaned off , and they are clearanced for the pushrods on the sides of the intake ports which limit how much meat you can safely remove when porting.
If I was going with 59 degree , I'd probably look at other options.......mostly due to fewer choices in intake and exhaust.

I forgot to mention cam bearings too.........
The best advice I could give is be certain of what you buy and that it will fit your end use.
Some take babbit cam bearings , some are 50 m.m. and some are 60 m.m. rollers.
