Hey guys,
My sister's got the above vehicle. Trans shudders occasionally, going in and out of lockup. Changed fluid, helped a little. Local trans shop recommended dialing up the line pressure some - "not more than 2 CCW turns". Did it about 1-3/4 turns. Didn't measure the pressure, didn't have the tools. Needless to say, the line pressure adjustment screw is on the VB, so another 8 qts of fluid later, the problem is only slightly better. I don't know if it's the cleaner fluid or the upped pressure.

He says those TCs are notorious for losing their lockup clutch linings. Says also about the only thing to do is drive the car that way until the trans finally craps out.

Anything else I can do to improve my sister's car's driveability? And when comes time to fix/replace the trans, is there a decent replacement aftermarket TC that works on a daily driver that lives in snow country?
Thanks,
Marq

You did not mention the mileage on the vehicle.Same trans in wifes 04 went 113,000 before shift issues led to rebuild. Not aware of an aftermarket TQ.Sonnax has a boat load of upgrade parts for the trans.

It's got about 80K miles on it now.

Was thinking about purchasing a TPS and/or maybe a brake switch for it, but I hate to start throwing parts at it when my sister's on a fixed income.

TIA...

Is the proper fluid in it ? The Mopar only fluid 7176 ! If not, that would cause a shudder.

When I replaced the 8 qts of fluid, I used 6 qts. of Mopar fluid and 2 qts. of Amsoil I had in inventory.

As an aside, should I remove the anti-drainback valve near the cooler? I've heard they can get plugged or restricted.

Was the Mopar fluid ATF+4? If not, that fluid might stop TC shudder.

Yes. Amsoil fluid also ATF+4 compatible, also.

I'm wondering if there's any way to tell if the TC lockup clutch lining is gone. Already changed most of the fluid with the last pressure adjustment. The magnet didn't have much on it.

And if the lining is gone, is there any additive or friction modifier that can be used that won't harm the rest of the trans.
