I am pulling my engine and need some help removing the flexplate bolts. I can get a wrench on the bolts but cant stop the engine from turning over. Is there some place I can jam a screwdriver or something? The engine is a 73 400 727.

put a 1 1/4 socket and breaker bar on the big bolt on the damper on the front of the engine to hold it from turning...

Yes you can use one of the holes in the flexplate and catch a ridge on the back of the block with a large screw driver or a small pipe, it takes another person too.

Take care,

I remove the oil filter and roll the bolt over to the hole and shoot it with the 3/8 airgun on SB.

use airgun on the BB also

I also use a spot of spray paint to mark the TC and flex plate for when it goes back together.

I simply get the bolt and wrench in the position with the least leverage for the engine to turn, yank the wrech, out it comes.

Use 9/16 6 point socket and rap handle with a hammer to break loose.

Thanks, I had a friend hold the crank bolt with a socket as I tried to loosen the bolts and I couldn't get any of them to budge. I also have no access to air tools.

Are they the stock 5/16" with 9/16" heads? Use a quality 6 point box wrench. If they are 3/4" heads on 7/16" bolts, it is tricky to keep wrench from rolling off the corners, trashing the bolt heads. I've always managed to get bolts out or in, and never broke a tooth on flywheel-torque conv-flexplate when prying a beefy screwdriver against them either. There has to be a way.

Grind the head flat on a 6 point socket removing the rounded inner shoulders so that it is less likely to slip. using a 3/8 flex handle on it and a BFH to give it a good rap to break it loose.

I have a long 12' double boxed end 6 point wrench I use

like said, get it into position with least amount of leverage to turn the engine.

have your buddy hold the crank bolt again also

use 2 wrenches hooking the open end with the boxed end of the other to make it 14-15 inches for more leverage.

Thanks, I cant get a socket on there without it coming off because the heads of the bolts are so short. I may try tomorrow with a breaker bar and very carefully try to apply torque without twisting off of the head.

That is exactly why I said to take the socket to the grinder and flatten the end so that it fits down on the head of the bolt square and not on the internal taper of the socket.

I took a grinder to the socket and that did it. The motor is now sitting on my garage floor.

Thanks for the help. It worked very well too. I removed them with a 3/8" drive ratchet.
