Had the car out for the first time a few weeks ago and the engine felt really flat. Tried advancing the timing did help some but still felt flat. When we got home my Dad wanted to try and power time it and it started to really wake up. But checked the timing and it was at 55 degrees! So I took it apart and checked the TDC and the cam timing and found out that the cam intake center line is at 76 degrees! So looked at the timing marks on the timing gears and their off by 3 teeth. I then lined it up line it should and rechecked the centerline and now at 106 like it was suposed to have been. Reassembled and runs like a comlpete different motor. It was 2 years ago when it was assembled and I was getting ready for my deployment to Iraq and had my mind on other things. Thats my excuse and im sticking to it! I cant believe it ran this way!

I'm suprized the pistons didnt hit... they must be
down the hole a fair bit or the cam doesnt have much lift

The pistons are zero deck have reliefs in them The cam has .533 lift. I cant believe that they didnt hit. When I ran it struggled to get to 6k.

I had a similar problem on a bone stock 5.2 Magnum engine in my Dakota. Put a new Comp Cams timing set on it, never ran after that. Moved across country, played around with it for a while and finally decided to check cam center line. Same thing, dot was three teeth off on the cam gear. EFI engines luckily wont run like that, LOL

When I checked the marks on the gears there were no dots on the crank gear. So when it was assembled the keyway ended up being where the dot was. That ended up being 3 teeth off. Now looking back I should have degreed it then and found TDC. That put the crank keyway at about the 1 oclock position. This was my first big block. I guess I learned the hard way.

Thanks again!

I was wondering what the ET loss or even HP loss was with it off that far. If recall it went 8.20 in the 1/8. According to the moroso calulator it should be close to 6.50. Is it possible to gain that much?

It will run a bunch better now I had a erson roller cam that was off 10 degrees on the pin location, it was a boat mottor and wouldn't rev past 3000 RPM in the boat. It is not uncommon to use the wrong marks on the crank gear when aligning the marks, don't ask me how I know even more than once You must use the outer marks on the gears, not the inner marks above the keyways I have seen the cam gear mark off one tooth(12 degrees) also You must degree every cam every time

From now on no matter how big a hurry I am I will always degree the cam. I still cant believe it ran as well as it did. Just felt really flat.

Hell with it being that far off I'm suprized it even
ran let along not breaking parts... I had a roller
cam that the key way was off 27* and it crashed the
pistons... I just lined up the dots to get a base line
before starting to do the degreeing
