Okay....picked up a mini-starter today (91 Dak S/B).....question is the top starter bolt hole is way larger than the bottom hole, but the threads are the same.....does the top hole require a special bolt or a cam type spacer for aligning the starter....?????

This is for my 408/360 based stroker with a 70's a-body aluminum 4-speed 10.5" bell/h.

any help would be appreciated.....thanks in advance

Or did I just get the wrong mini starter for this application...????

So if I get this right you just let the starter slide into the register in the b/h and use a bolt w/large washer to lock it in place....??????

I just put a new starter on the Dart. Im using a 727.
But the top whole slides onto tranny, and a nut goes on it.
The rest of the wholes take the bolts.

I think if you check the top bolt hole is larger I have seen this due to the stud size in the trans case.

the correct position comes from the starter itself fitting into the case or adapter plate

The top hole on this bell is the same thread size as the bottom...????? But the top hole in the starter is twice the size of the bottom hole.....only two bolt holes to use.....with the starter in place and the bottom bolt installed it is very rigid.....?????

if you have the nose of the starter located in the bellhousing, all you need to do is bolt it up tight. the shank of the stud that's normally used for the top hole is larger than the threaded area of a standard bolt. once it's bolted up it can't move around though so it's no big deal.

Thanks guys....I'm going to make a bushing for the top hole to fill it up....don't like the idea of just slamming a bolt in there....probably would be fine....but no big deal to make a bushing either

Rick..

Have been using it that way for years and years.

Because of using a P/G, adapters, and flexplates, larger hole

allows adjustment, to help ring gear/starter gear mesh.

15:1 540" B1... Same big upper hole w/ smaller bolt..

Chris..

If you have a production bell just use the correct stud. No need to fab any bushings.

Yep... its just a shouldered stud... screws into the
trans and uses a nut.... bolt on the bottom hole

You should be working too!!! If I get home in time I may go to spectate. I'm too fat and old to race when it's this hot and am without a trailor atm. I could drive the GTX there, but I don't like to race without having a way to get it home if it breaks.
