Hi all,

I have my K-member out, and want to make it look good. I would have it hot-tanked but, since I can't paint inside, I don't want to remove any paint that might already be there (or are they even painted there?). I'm leaning toward degreasing it with a bio-degradable cleaner, then blasting only the outside, followed by painting with (possibly) a satin-finish, black Rustoleum. Opinions? How about the paint choice? Would gloss be better? I'm not going for a 100 pt. restoration, but just want it to look good and not collect dirt too easily. Thanks for all replies!!

I've used (and in the process of using again as we speak) Eastwood Chassis Black (satin) it is an excellent finish that is extremely durable. I am actually using thier "Extreme" chassis black this time around and it is slow drying, but is supposed to be even more durable then their normal chassis black (which I have a few cans of still and does work excellent)

Whatever you do , DO NOT use por 15. I had mine powdercoated from a guy from moparts. Right now im swaping out a complete front end, to a powdercoated front end. Its the best way to go, control arms, strut rods,k frame, spindles, you name it im replacing it. If you wait a week or so i'll send you some pics

Why not forget about the black and go for a grey - maybe even a metallic grey. Black just shows all the dirt and sh*t.

Hot tanking is a great option but won't do squat for the rust. From what I see I'd say blasting is your only option.

They are raw steel inside.

You can always pour some epoxy primer or paint in the holes and swish it around if you want to make sure it's coated inside. It would take some serious neglect to make a k-frame rust out so I wouldn't worry about it.

Even if you are going to paint it you might want to take it to a powder coater to clean. They will bake it to burn out any oil and grease in the seams before they blast it.

I sent my old greasy K out for modification - before sending it I tried to clean it up with degreaser and a pressure washer. Old baked on oil does not like to come off. I got it clean enough to ship but that's it.

Hot tank is the way to go. Before spraying the new paint on use a small brush to get the hidden areas as best you can and call it good.

If you are hot tanking I'd use Eastwood rust encapsulator followed by chassis black. If you are hot tanking and blasting, you can put the chassis black directly on the clean steel.

Could you give your reasons why NOT to use POR 15?

When I did mine, I used a hot water pressure washer to clean as much as I could before countless hours of blasting. My painter used a filler epoxy primer followed by a gloss black basecoat/clearcoat to match the rest of the black pieces on the car. It was alot of work but it was beautiful.

Around here you can get a k-frame sandblasted and will be clean as a whistle for $75 or less. It would take hours of your time and alot of solvent and your labor to get it cleaned up. Its well worth it to get it sandblasted...and then paint it whatever color you like. Also, many sandblasting places offer powdercoating - just call around!

Your plan is pretty much what I did. Only difference is I used a wire wheel instead of blasting and also had the seams welded up a little better for strength. Painted mine satin black. Just shoot the paint around as best you can and don't sweat it too much.

POR 15 only peels off it the surface wasn't prepared correctly. The stuff is tough as Hell.

Oh, with regards to your first question, Rust-Oleum Industrial semi gloss black holds up pretty well too.

No, you're wrong. I followed their instructions to the letter including using all of their prep products. Still peeled. That stuff works okay for an interior surface like maybe the insides of your floors or something, but definitely not anything that's exposed to the elements.

Maybe I have had good luck with POR 15 because I sandblast everything, I'm not sure. Plus I wait a good day after I put the metal prep on, to let it dry completely. A friend used it on crusty floors and it peeled, but he never does anything right anyway. I am going to try Rust Bullet next, I am up for something new that is easier.

EPA regs eliminated hot tanks at the machine shops here so they went to oven baking. From how clean blocks/heads are when they come out of there I would go that route if it is available. that way every nook/cranny is squeaky clean then on to the proper primer/paint product which I am uninformed about also.

Mine was caked in 30 yrs of crap. I took a putty knife to it. Then I took EZ Off oven cleaner to it at the local car wash, then I sandblasted it, epoxy primed it and just shot it in Semi-gloss black. ALL front suspension parts were done this way.
