I am less than two tenths from being told that I need a roll bar.

Had not ever considered having to put a bar in the Duster.

Always saw it as a street car that raced in the summer. The mega-hot wife already thinks it's too noisy (40 series with 3 inch exhaust).

Will I be able to keep the fold down seat in the Duster or will that have to go?

Has anyone found a roll bar that will sweep over the back seat in a SpaceSaver Duster?

I was in your shoes a couple years back. I guess it is up to you to decide, do you want to go faster or are you content with your current e.t's? My car was a fold down rear seat, sunroof, a/c car that had a 340 in it. Giving in to peer pressure and the need for speed I bit the bullet and put a roll bar in mine after I installed the new motor. I did a mini-tub(still need to finish cutting down the rear seat)and ladder bar in mine as well. my rear bars were custom bent to run along the roof line and drop behind the rear seat. I also used the Jegs "Pro Street" front bars that drop down below the armrests. This was about as street friendly as I could go and still pass tech. Good Luck!

No disrespect intended,,just some humor.....I would keep the fold down rear seat,,,also keep the 'mega hot wife'...

I think we needs picts to help us understand the concerns. Make sure to include mega-hot wife in back seat.

If you take your car to a competent shop with a bender they should be able to custom bend a cage that will meet all your requirements

No "feeling" needed, as I see it: run it at the current level, or slow it down - and skip the cage - or put some pipe in it and go quicker/faster if that's what you want (with Mrs Mega-Hot's approval). Stiffening a unibody car is a good thing. Putting a quieter exhaust system on it if that's what bugs the Missus may be a wise move: you've probably heard the saying "if Momma ain't happy, NO ONE's happy".

You know the interesting thing is that there are about a dozen or so cars these days that a person can buy that will go faster than 11.50 directly from the showroom. Now, they almost all have six figure price tags but nonetheless they can be bought, licensed, inspected and driven on public roads without problem. But can’t be run at a drag strip!

Another example, I was at Maple Grove for the Mopar race this year and my helmet was unusable because the date had expired. However, I used the same exact helmet the very next week to road race my sport bike at a track that I hit speeds equal to my car. And the road course had turns in it with many more riders (three riders went down that day, too)!!! Had no problem passing their tech with said helmet… My brother was also at Maple Grove and he had to remove, THAT’S REMOVE his extinguisher because it was restrained without using a metal strap!

Long story short (sorry), I have a 10 second car that I won’t cut up to put a roll cage into and IHRA/NHRA safety rules are mostly either moronic or a money grab!

The S&W kit I installed in my car has rear bars that follow along the roof and go down through the package tray. I will not let anyone ride in the back seat though, I feel the bars would be more dangerous in a accident than the accident would be.

When I ran the 340 it went mid 7.20s and low mid 90s in the 1/8, I had no bar but should have. After I installed the 408 it went 6.57 @ 105 mph there was no doubt it was getting a bar.

When I started racing my 300 a few years back, I decided to incorporate this "dilemma" in to my over all plan. I started with a very complete and relatively rare car and wanted to make sure I could return it to it's factory stock condition when I was done racing it so - - - no roll bar ( I wasn't about to cut up my real "Correnthion leather" interior ), use the original ( or same as what the car came with ) engine, trans, diff. This made the project fun, a little more challenging, and capped off the $ thing in to something very affordable. I am also very close to my goal, so I have some decisions to make shortly also - continue to race it like it is or find something else that is more easily cut-up-able - so to speak. Good luck on your decision.

Safety rules are moronic or a money grab?
OK don't race at any sanctioned track and take your chances.

Yeah, dragstrips are all over the place. A person can be picky! And they’re opening up new ones all the time!

Safety rules are not "moronic" IMO. - especially the roll bar rule - and especially if you are talking about an A body car.

My opinion is just that,...an opinion.

If you and your passengers put on 5 point harnesses And helmets everytime you go out for a cruise on the streets, then you'll be fine.

Otherwise, leave the rollbar for the track only cars.

I sure would hate to get hit on the streets with bars, even padded, inches from my head and ribs, if I'm going to move from having just a lap belt or 3 point belt on...and not have a helmet to protect my brain from said bars.

Roll bars do their job great, when the driver and passengers don't Move from the seat very much...and have helmets on.

Just watch any crash test footage. In a pass car (even new ones) the occupants move around a bunch from side impacts, rear and front impacts. Crash footage from a race car, show the driver (only on in the car usually) barely move to get close to any bars!

Just my opinion.

Put the bars in, as some have suggested,AFTER you add frame connectors. (if they aren't already in) Even in a street car, especially a lite, high hp vehicle, they are a big plus for safety & and looking at it another way, what you're essentially doing is making "crumble zones" in the car, so once again it helps on the street......

Safety rules are written in someone else's blood and lawsuits. Soccer doesn't have any rollbar requirements. Maybe those who feel put out by rules out to be heading goals.

I think what the OP is really struggling with is having to make modifications that will impact the originality of his ride, not weather the rules are good or bad, or weather roll bars are good or bad. It's a difficult decision that many here have to confront at one point in time. You have to look down the road a ways to come up with the correct answer for your particular situation / car. Another one of those - gotta have a plan going in.
