Have a '84 360, am changing out the valve seals in the engine bay since they are shot, but still have good compression on the engine.

Have the thumbwheel valve spring compressor and can get the keepers out on the intake side but cannot get the retainer/or/rotator to push down on the exhaust side, to pop the keepers. Am running 90psi of air in the cylinders and cannot tap the retainer down when the spring is compressed. What gives? I've tapped on it pretty good, but start overcoming the air pressure on the valve... Put some penetrant on the keepers, tapped on the side of the retainer, no luck. Is there a different compressor to use with the rotator or something?

Confused...

THanks for the help!

Put piston of the cylinder at BDC, put a bunch of cord/rope in cylinder (through the spark plug hole), and move piston back towards TDC to hold the valves closed. Put a socket over the retainer/rotator and whack it with a hammer to loosen the retainer from the locks.

Thank you very much! I'll see how that works, and see if there are any other "surprises"!

the rope trick is the bestest and fastest way to know them off.

now would be a good time to ditch the rotators and use 8 more intake retainers.

you would have to swap the 8 springs as well but set of comp 901-16 drop right on with stock seals and are less than 100$

those 84 spring are well used by now and may be a little weak
