I have a 1972 340 4speed Cuda currently being painted. The car is a factory optioned V21 blackout hood car. I would like as correct as an appearance as possible but also not have to worry about getting wax on the black paint. Here is the last thread https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...rue#Post6643220 I am wondering about a mat clear used on a light type texture paint? Has anyone done this?

When I did the hood black out on my 72 Cuda, I used Mar-Hyde textured black,...IIRC it's made by PPG, the less reduction when spraying, the more texture, you can wax it with no issues if you want

Thanks, I just need to be able to tell the painter how much texture is correct, then he can test shoot a practice panel (after the red cures). So can anyone help me with the proper amount of texture...either a good pic, desciption or even mixture amounts that produce the desired effect. Any info on the technique used to shoot it for the desired result would be good ie HVLP gun, pressure patern distance etc.

I need the 72 Factory Service Manual paint chart from the Refinishing Procedures section. This is to determine if the black out hood paint was organisol in 72.

The attached paint chart shows flat black exterior paint, but no mention of organisol textured paint? What did the 1970 paint chart (AAR Cuda) show?

The 1970 paint chart (think AAR organisol hood) shows a black velvet paint?

I believe "Black Velvet" is the interior paint used for dash, steering column etc. for 1970.

X9 paint is X9. it is called different names, in each model year, but it's still black. each division had a different name for it, same as the rest of the colors. black is black velvet , black diamond, formal black, etc. it's not used on a hood, unless you have a x9 car.

The original hood treatment didn't have quite as much texture, but this looks sooo much better than the original paint. If you are looking for perfect originality, the texture is too much. However, the paint shown will be MUCH easier to keep looking good (especially when it comes to getting wax on it).

Thanks again guys. I really needed this info and you all are AWESOME.

Has anyone done this in enamel? I'll need to convert it into a useable enamel code... my car is shot in enamel

Take the paint code to the paint supply store and see if they have a crossover number from the lacquer paint to enamel.

Reading this it sounds like the single stage urethane code is dcc 9355.
