I'm looking for a flat/hyd cam suggestion for a street/strip 416 build.

10:1 CR
OOTB Edelbrocks
Edy RPM and 750 holley
Long tube headers
In a 4 gear Duster with a 3.73 gear

The owner of the car wants a good lopey idle, but from a tuning perspective I'd want something thats not too tempermental to tune and don't want to leave too much on the table in favor of a lope (I'm guessing that the deal with one of those Comp Thumpr cams).

Suggestions?

The 295 is actually pretty hairy. The XE275HL seems to be a really popular choice, but make sure you can handle the lift, and it requires dual springs.

I just installed a XE274H in my 410. Pretty much the same duration as the 275, but with sub-.500" lift. No mistaking if for a stock cam, but it has reasonable street manners.

That XE275HL does seem to be popular doesn't it?

I am a huge BULLET fan, so call Tim and he'll grind you a custom cam.

with all that.

I have 416 with ported edelbrocks, TTI, and run the XE275S. I can run errands around town in it and it will fry street tires.

Sorry, but all hydraulics aside, I would go with the solid mopar .557" cam...I run it, my engine builder runs it, and so do many others for these 408/416 combos. Great idle, awesome mid range, and pulls hard on top even in heavier cars. Not to mention it sounds awesome at WOT.... Only problem with your combo is the crappy carb. Get a good Quick Fuel or other 750-950 that flows well. You could get an annular 950, and it will run with the big dogs.

Yeah the carb is just a cheapie 080508s which will stay for a while at least.

I was hoping to find something that will work with the stock edelbrock max lift limit and springs.

I suppose a solid lifter isn't out of the question but since it isn't my beast, I am not sure how much the owner wants to get into lash adjustments.

I agree with the hydraulic especially with aluminum heads. Valve lash will always be correct. I also like Racer Brown stuff, but I would go with Comp in this case since they are the only ones to offer in house nitriding. Given the recent history of flat tappet cam problems I think this may well be a worthwhile option. Since a hydraulic operates at zero lash this can also help. I am using a 284XE hydraulic in my Indybrock headed 360 with a manual transmission and it works fine. I think with a stroker I would go with a 285HL with a 108* LSA.

I have a 408 with the comp 275hl in it. It is annoying with the gear spread of my 833od because it runs choppy below 2200 and it doesnt satisfy as a stoplight race cam because it's all over at 5k.

I also have similar CR and ootb eddy heads.

I have a lifter that's ticking an an oil leak that requires the engine to be pulled so I'm thinking seriously about a solid FT cam from bullet with a touch more duration and lift while I'm in there.

I think MP puts the old 509 in the 410/6pack crate motors.

Recently put together a 410 with a custom engle grind from
Jeff Patterson (rapid340) and it works great, but it's a solid
247/253. Has a nice chop at idle, smooths out at 1500 and pulls
hard to 6k.

I'm sure it would pull past 6k but I have a TKO-600 and I don't
want to shift higher than that. Mike

I put a Hughes HER2836ALN-108 in a 318 based 391 stroker with RHS heads (2.02" intake) w/ 10:1CR.
Runs in a 70 Sat with a 904 w/ low gear set, 3000rpm stall 9.5" converter and 2.94:1 rear end.
Customer is very happy with power, street behavior and of course the sound in idle...

Ditto - it won't be hairy in a 416.

I run an XS282S in my 390 and the idle feels like a XE272 in a 318.

I reckon the XE295 would behave about the same in a 416.

The Lunati RAMM mentioned would be a good one, I've run the the 240/250 predessesor of that grind in a 451 and it worked really well. Lobe wise I prefer the old Ultradyne (Now sold through Bullet) Hydraulics, I'd look for something right at the 239I/247E @.050 range and .520 lift on 110 centers in at 105, I'd normally go 108 centers but with the 4 speed we can broaden the curve a bit.

If you want to go a tad milder drop down to the 231/239 ultradyne on 108 which is about the best hot street 340/360 hrdraulic flat tappet I've ever seen, Good lope but great drivability and it pulls like a solid upstairs. It should make about as much mid range grunt and Punch in any gear as you'd want with a 4" arm.

I'd at least sharpen up the VJ and do a bowl blend on the eddies before bolting them on, money well spent

I'm leaning toward that Lunati Voodoo or the XE295HL. Edelbrock claims the heads are good to .575 OOTB.

Think the stock springs are up to the task?
