Hey guys, I think by now every 4 speed guy on here is sick of the problems I have been asking about, but im here to bother all one more time lol I finally got my A833 shifting great in all forward gears with no problems at all (Im using a vertigate shifter with a reverse lockout feature) but when I go to get reverse it is VERY HARD. I have to try about 5 or 6 times and sometimes it will still not go in. I have to slam the reverse lever, and even when i think its in, its not because I can feel it jump right out. The reverse ball and detent were all in the correct spots last time i had the trans apart (earlier this week) I tried pulling off the tab for the reverse lever and just engaging reverse right off the side cover and I can see why its very hard with the lever attached- it is almost just as impossible for me to get reverse from the sidecover alone! I am hoping it may be a sidecover issue as discussed in this thread that I did a search on. https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=928314&an=0&page=13But before I go yanking just the sidecover id like to get more opinions to see if its something more serious that I have to pull the whole trans out for (AGAIN! ) Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

As often as this comes up it should be high up in the Tech Archives.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yep. I experienced it last year. Mine would go into reverse OK, but really required force to get it out of reverse. Slight upward shift of the side cover and it was fixed.

thanks for the info guys, i kinda figured this was what it was (im glad its a simple fix too).
One question though, are you guys using shouldered bolts on your side covers? Mine are all shouldered bolts and im just wondering if this moving of the side cover is possible when using shouldered bolts that would kinda direct where it lines up
Yes I have the shouldered bolts. The amount of movement is small (maybe .010???). The bolts will allow for it.

Depends on how pliable the right stuff is , the cover needs to MOVE .
well i ordered a gasket from the dealer...Just worried that it will leak since even with the right stuff i had the old synchromesh leaking in one spot.
Im assuming its possible to get the cover back on the forks with the transmission in the car, just a very hard and annoying procedure I imagine?

This is the situation that seems to be a problem. As I noted, sometimes I've had to grind to get enough clearance to get a smooth engagement.

I have only had this be an issue on the 67 and newer trans (with the long shoulder bolt by the reverse switch) In this situation I machine .010" off the shoulder bolt which gives you an extra .005" clearance to move the side cover up. I only do this when both A and B 1/2 shift lever assemblies have been tried. Dan

what do you mean by A and B shift lever assemblies?
I finally got the gasket today so its just a matter of doing the deed now (not looking forward to it)

Should I follow the procedure mentioned in the manual, or should I try just moving the cover first? I dont have any extra tabs lying around, and im not sure how to distinguish A from B
i just saw now that your diagram has a little blurb of where to grind ...but if I want to do that im thinking the whole transmission has to come out and apart again, which im not looking forward too..hopefully moving the cover will help, if not i guess I have no choice
As has been mentioned the steps that you should take (in this order)
1) Try shifting the cover up slightly to get clearance (this is the first procedure in the FSM) 2) Try the selective fit interlock levers, (this is just changing them until you have clearance, I don't know a current source of these but someone may) 3) Grinding for clearance (this is the last resort and yes, you have to disassemble the trans..try shifting the cover though first, I've only had to grind on one trans in 40 years of doing this)
Good luck

What about grinding the 1/2 lever for clearance ?
