So i finally got my car to a point where i could drive it last night.(First time in about 3 years) Cruised around the block a few times and then took it down the road a mile or two and back. Upon pulling into the alley i rumbled along for about a hundred yards, and then it just up and died on me. No hessitation no anything just died like i turned off the key. So i turn the key on and it is really hard cranking over and i cannot hear my fuel pump. Its a holley blue pump, so you can hear it a block away if its running. So i get out and pull off the air cleaner and open up the throttle. A little bit of gas spits out, not a big shot like it is supposed to. i pull out the fuse for my pump and it looks ok. so i stick the fuse back in and climb back in the car, turn on the key and the fuel pump kicks on like its supposed to. The engine fires back up without hesitation. I drive it the rest of the way home and i let it sit there and idle for a while with no issue. I take it around the block a few more times, and still no issue. Does anyone have any ideas? I am hessitant to take it for any long trips without knowing why it cut out on me.

i would guess that the pump is gummed up. todays gas will turn to a brown/blackish gum if left to sit in carbs or pumps for a long period of time. if the pumped crapped out it probably wouldn't start up again. if it were me i'd take the pump apart and make sure its clean and probably do the same for the carb.

Sounds like an electrical issue. If the fuel pump just shut off like that, I would be looking for some loose wire connections. If it were vapor lock the carb's fuel bowls and / or fuel line leading to the carb would be extremely hot to the touch.

EDIT: lewtot also has a good point. Was the car stored with fuel in it for three years?

Carb was recently rebuilt and the pump is brand new. The first time they had fuel through them was back in october when the engine was broken in. It sat untill last weekend when i started it up again.

Do you have a fuel cell or stock tank? Either way, new gas goes bad very quickly and I would drain the fuel system and pump some fresh fuel through to clean the system out. I would also triple check all my electrical connections.

I'd bet money you don't have the fuel pump plumbed properly. Those blue pumps need a large feed line with the pump mounted below the fuel tank and sometimes even needs a return line to keep it cool on the street.

IMO they suck on the street.

Stock gas tank with a sump welded in. 1/2" fuel line all the way up to the pressure regulator near the carb. Pump is mounted as low as i can get it on the rear frame rail. The old gas was drained out about 2 months ago and new was added just last weekend.

I had a similar problem.
Holley tech insisted that the pump be mounted below the bottom of the fuel tank. The pump is a pusher not a puller. When the pump works hard, the thermal overloads in the pump shut it off; that's why you did not hear it running. When the overloads cool, the pump runs again; PITA.
I could not mount my pump any lower, so I switched to Aeromotive and installed a return line.
Check to make sure your tank is vented; if not vented you may get the same symptoms.

#1 find/fix the part time open in the pump wiring. #2 labored cranking like too much initial?
